General approach

These video packs are designed to support the generalist class teacher who has not been trained as a specialist language teacher. Each pack covers at least a term's work, and centres round a video for class use. The videos are recorded with native speakers (not actors) in realistic contexts in the country - giving pupils an authentic model of pronunciation.

The teachers guide suggests class and group activities which mainly involce talking and listening; also photocopiable worksheets and flashcards to practice word recognition. The courses are designed specifically for KS2 and SEN use, and have been widely tested and used in different LEAs across the UK. Vocabulary and images are selected for relevance to primary-age children: progression is in very small steps with constant repetition.

The Starter Pack, "Tu y Yo" helps young beginners talk about themselves find out about other people. Each section of the video introduces a very small number of key words and phrases:

  • greetings
  • saying goodbye
  • asking people how they are
  • introducing yourself and asking other children's names
  • colours
  • numbers 1-6, 7-12, and 13-31
  • saying how old you are and asking other children their age
  • the months of the year
  • saying when your birthday is and asking other children when their birthdays are
  • days of the week, saying the date
  • talking about your brothers and sisters
  • talking about your pets

PLUS:

  • useful Spanish words and phrases that teachers and pupils can use in the classroom when playing games and participating in language learning activities.

  • audio CD with vocabulary and pronunciation guide for teachers, also songs in full singing and accompaniment-only 'karaoke' versions
