Software for teaching languages to youngsters is becoming increasingly more widely available. Most of the software produced in the past has been aimed at the home access market, given that MFL has not formed part of the primary curriculum.

When purchasing software, one needs take into account licensing and networking agreements. It is also important to consider how the software will be used, whether by an individual pupil at a workstation or for whole class teaching with a digital projector or whiteboard.

It is impossible to know just by looking at the packaging why some CD-Roms are relatively cheap whilst others are very expensive. Evaluations from other teachers can provide practical advice to support your purchasing decisions. Here are some areas of on-line support:

  • CILT Information Sheet 54: Modern Language Software for the Primary classroom
This new listing of language learning software for under-11s provides information on titles currently available in the four main European languages: French, German, Spanish and Italian, as well as other languages such as Welsh, Portuguese and Danish.

  • Curriculum Online
Lists all multimedia resources to support teaching and learning
which may be bought with eLCs (eLearning Credits) and other funds. Includes links to independent evaluations and the option to evaluate and compare resources before buying direct from suppliers.

  • Teachers Evaluating Educational Multimedia (TEEM)
TEEM sets out to evaluate multimedia in the classroom, providing information about what works and why. Publishers and trained TEEM evaluators - all classroom teachers - have contributed information on current CD ROM based educational multimedia. The site also provides clear instructions for teachers wishing to become evaluators and publishers wishing to submit their materials for evaluation.

  • Becta - Schools
The Schools website is a sector of the British Educational Communications and Technology Agency (Becta) corporate website and aims to offer ICT support and advice to all education professionals working in schools.
The site provides information about choosing resources, as well as snapshots of ICT use and advice on embedding ICT in primary learning and teaching in all subjects, including MFL.

  • Languages ICT
This website from CILT and ALL provides a gateway to information and guidance for teachers of languages on using ICT in the classroom. The Managing ICT for Languages section includes advice on selecting ICT resources which may be useful for primary MFL teachers.
