Title: Bon Appetit! French Food Tasting
Venue: Skell 3 - York st John University, York.
Time: 4.30-6pm
Speaker: Au Panier Gourmand

This session focussed on the IU strand of the KS2 Framework, looking specifically at how food and drink could bring the foreign culture into the classroom, taking Health amd Safety issues and use of the target language into account. Instead of the usual coffee and cakes, a large group was treated to tasters of a wide variety of French food by a local company, accompanied by background information about regional cooking in France. It was clear that many people in the audience had not tasted some of the pates, traditional cakes, fruit drinks and sirops, so this was a wonderful opportunity to imagine how children might react. The consensus was that there was an intensity of taste which reflected the French maxim of 'live to eat not eat to live'. We also agreed that there were lots of simple foods which could realistically be shared with young children, either in a single session, or as part of a longer series of lessons. Bon Appetit!
