Regular sessions are held around Carlisle and North East Cumbria.

Date: 01/10/2008
Title: KS2 Framework Focus: Developing Literacy objectives
Venue: Chapman Library, Trinity School, Carlisle
Time: 4.15 - 5.45 (refreshments from 4.00)
Speaker: Helen Kent, Comenius NW KS2 consultant

Following on from a similar session last year on oracy objectives, we took the literacy strand of the KS2 Framework as our starting point for this session. Colleagues looked closely at the descriptors and attempted to order them according to year group. They were then presented with a hand-out containing examples of activities relating to many of the objectives. We watched and then discussed two clips from the Primary Languages Training Zone. There were more hands-on activities as participants were invited to try reading out tongue-twisters, which was fun but also reinforced the importance of specific phonemes. Another activity involved reconstructing the sequence of a recipe in French. The comment was made that it is only when you do the activity yourself that you have an idea of how accessible it is to the children. It was interesting to note that a number of MFL co-ordinators were attending with a brief to report back to the rest of their colleagues, so making an effective use of the resource.

Title: Intercultural swap-shop. An opportunity to exchange activities designed to develop intercultural understanding in the primary classroom.
Venue: Chapman Library, Trinity School, Carlisle
Time: 4.15 - 5.45 (refreshments from 4.00)
Speaker: Various local teachers

This lively session started with a clip from the Training Zone showing children helping to make Chinese dumplings. Following a brief introduction to IU Framework objectives, a number of colleagues presented ideas they had used in class. These included an overview of school life in France, how to make a map of Italy out of the kinds of pasta that is produced in the different regions, how to make a collage of French geography and culture from holiday brochures and finding and using equivalent first names in different languages. Refreshments were a variety of food and drinks from different cultures and colleagues were shown how they could incorporate food tasting into their lessons as a way of promoting other cultures, but also to practise simple opinions. Native speakers were then invited to share information about Christmas in their countries and to introduce simple seasonal craft activities that could easily be done in class using a minimum of language for the instructions.
