Norfolk Regional Support Group welcomes the participation of anyone with an interest in primary languages from Norfolk and neighbouring counties. Sessions will be held in various venues around Norfolk.

Date: 20/11/2007
Title: Interactive Whiteboard Ideas for Primary Languages
Venue: West Norfolk PDC, PE30 2HU
Time: 16.30-18.00 (tea from 16.00)
Speaker: Wendy Adeniji

Brilliantly overcoming major technology gremlins (our board refused to be interactive) Wendy Adenji gave a diverse and exciting presentation with plenty of new ideas for teachers to try out themselves. If the audience thought they were quite familiar with PowerPoint...they quickly realised that they weren't! Wendy showed us how we could use certain features, such as allowing objects to enter from different directions or the possibility of a picture or word flashing on and off, that would transform a static presentation into a really interactive one for both primary language games and story telling. Wendy then gave an overview of the possibilities inside the Smart and Promethean programmes for both teacher and pupils activities, such as using the 'grouping' tool to make a unique 'Smart' monster that could be named and used for other activities in the future. The audience left having been both entertained and inspired.

For her second session on Norfolk (the Norwich venue's technology worked wonderfully and we had both Smart and Promethean boards working well) Wendy Adenji gave a diverse and exciting presentation with plenty of new ideas for teachers to try out themselves. Title: Using Digiblu cameras to celebrate and assess language skills (Part 1)
Venue: West Norfolk PDC PE30 2HU
Time: 16.30-18.00 (tea from 16.00)
Speaker: Michaela Howard

Michaela Howard (Comenius primary adviser East Midlands) delivered an inspiring and hands on introduction to using Digital Blue cameras to celebrate and assess primary languages. Participants had hands on trialling time with the cameras (5 were available for schools to borrow if they agreed to feedback at the next meeting). Michaela provided plenty of ideas to use the cameras. The session finished with a quick overview of Photostory 3.

Title: All around Norfolk with games 'in the round'
Venue: Norwich PDC NR7 9QL
Time: 16.30-18.00 (tea from 16.00)
Speaker: Joan Dickie and Debbie Abbs

Joan Dickie introduced the session looking at the Nacell site with everyone sitting in a circle, anticipating (or dreading) the moment the parachute opened! But Debbie Abbs (Comenius East Primary consultant and new Norfolk adviser) had prepared such an interactive and enjoyable session that all language fears were allayed. All instruction language for both the parachute and circle time games was available in English, French, Spanish and German, as well as the possible vocabulary that could be practised in each game. Activities included Sponge Bob taking to the high seas in a 'tempesta', Asterix bouncing to 'onze' before being dropped through the parachute's hole and German days of the week being sung rapidly to the 'Hey Hey Hallo soundtrack' as we mimed Tennis and Fussball spielen under the chute. This session will be repated on other dates all around Norfolk (see below) - come and join us!

Title: Using Digiblu cameras to celebrate and assess language skills (Part 2)
Venue: West Norfolk PDC PE30 2HU
Time: 16.30-18.00 ( tea from 16.00)
Speaker: Joan Dickie

Quality made up for quantity at this Part 2 Digital Blue session as we saw strong evidence of the value these cameras bring to the primary languages classroom. Rudham Primary's Year 5/6 class (and their Leading Practitioner French teacher) have just begun learning Spanish. As confident French speakers they showed their confidence in speaking Spanish after only a few weeks learning.
Walton Primary's Year 6 took the cameras into every classroom and it became a wonderful and unplanned tour through the Framework! From single word replies in KS1, early KS2 progressed to phrases and sentences to some excellent and Q and A exchanges in Year 5/6. They also used the single frame feature to create plasticene figure cartoons of sporting figures which were awaiting a MFL soundtrack. Fakenham Junior's Year 6 made imaginative stick puppets and backgrounds. The puppets ranged from Bart Simpson to Afghani soldiers to New York fashionistas all speaking great Spanish! Finally Docking pupils gave impromptu evidence of their French skills.

Venue: Norwich PDC, NR7 9QL
Time: 16.30-18.00 ( tea from 16.00)
Speaker: Michaela Howard and Joan Dickie

This was repeat of the two part session run earlier in the year in Kings Lynn. 20 teachers attended to see the Kings Lynn feedback and to learn how they could also create their own Digiblue films to celebrate their primary language work. After some 'hands-on ' trialling, 5 schools borrowed the cameras to try this out for themselves..returning in a few weeks time to show their results

Another successful and lively repetition of this excellent training session in French, German and Spanish this time offered in the Kings Lynn area. Teachers went away with ideas to use the next day or to store for the future!

4 out of the 5 digiblue camera borrowing schools returned to show us some entertaining recordings from their classrooms and language days with examples in French and German.
All schools reported the activity was a great success but improved by a classes familarity with the recording equipment. Sound has proved a problem here and a noisy classroom doesn't always pick up the sound of a voice unless it is very close. Nevertheless all present felt this was a very valid way to record and assess pupil skills and they will all repeat the experience. Schools kindly offered their films to be used in training other teachers.
