Title: Using the Interactive Whiteboard to create Games and Stories
Speaker: Wendy Adeniji

Simon Green welcomed the group of 29 teachers, with quite a few new faces, to our first RSG session of 07/08. The LAs covered by the attendees included N. Yorks, Kirklees and W. Yorks. Simon promoted the range of Young Pathfinder books available to purchase and primary courses of interest being run by both CILT and Comenius. He also showed the available resources on the CILT, Comenius and NACELL websites. After a short comfort break, Wendy Adeniji, a specialist in using the interactive whiteboard in language teaching, showed creative ways to use the interactive whiteboard to teach languages and create games. She showed ideas to encourage prediction and use of the target language, and how to integrate sound. Wendy also covered how to find out ways to create stories on the whiteboard with examples of well-known stories such as Goldilocks and Red Riding Hood. Examples were covered in French, Spanish and German. All evaluations were extremely positive & the session was found to be very useful.

Title: Storytelling
Venue: Leeds Trinity & All Saints
Time: 4.30pm - 6.30pm, refreshments at 4.00pm
Speaker: Julie Burgess, Education Leeds

Simon Green welcomed attendees and led a brief discussion about Young Pathfinder 12, the role of the FLA in schools and how West Yorkshire can support FLAs. The CILT Primary Languages Show was also promoted.

The main focus of the session was presented by Leeds ASTs and KS2 consultants and looked at teaching storytelling in primary languages, including creating your own resources, making links to the KS2 Framework and linking stories to speaking skills using puppets to play the roles of the story. The session also included a demonstration of other resources, such as storybooks, jigsaws and word football. Finally there was an opportunity for networking, sharing ideas and views, viewing free materials, CILT publications and a welcome cup of tea and a bun.

Title: Cross-Curricular Work using Languages in the Primary School
Venue: Leeds Trinity & All Saints
Time: 4.30pm - 6.30pm, refreshments at 4.00pm
Speaker: Tess Wilkins

The main focus for the evening was "Languages and Cross-curricular links" by Education Bradford (led by Beverley Minor and Tess Wilkins). The first presentation covered ways in which primary teachers could introduce French into lessons by singing, vocabulary around the room, signs around the school and giving the date and weather in the target language. Sylvia Davey presented a Nativity play in French which had been produced by her school. The main pictures were on PowerPoint and the children learnt the script by heart and performed in December. We were all encouraged to join in as sheep, donkeys and shepherds! Also covered were ways in which languages could be introduced into numeracy (using bar charts) and a presentation about how French had been introduced into other subjects including design (mardi gras masks), PE (games and dancing) and ICT (French interactive map). We learnt the song 'heads and shoulders knees and toes' in Swahili. Wanda Selby showed a Beijing Olympics Primary Resource Pack that she had produced.

Title: Resources Fair
Venue: Leeds Trinity & All Saints
Time: 4.30pm - 6.30pm, refreshments at 4.00pm
Speaker: Various Publishers - TBC

The final West Yorkshire RSG for '07/08 was held at Leeds Trinity & All Saints on 18 June. There were 30 participants. This was a 2-part session with a publishers resource fair and a Spanish themed evening. Several publishers attended and others sent leaflets and flyers. There was also a selection of CILT/Comenius flyers. The theme for the evening was Spanish food and drink and Patricia Taylor provided a feast of food for us all to enjoy. There were sweet and savoury samples - favourites being a honey cake, a pineapple cake and chorizo and gazpacho. Patricia gave a fascinating talk about where all the food came from in Spain and linked it to the Intercultural Understanding section of the KS2 Framework.
There was also a light-hearted quiz, prize draw, a bingo session in Spanish and plenty of opportunity for participants to network and share experiences. We also welcomed a guest teacher from France who was in Leeds as part of an ITT programme.
A fitting end to another successful year.
