Regular sessions are held around Warrington. Date: 11/10/2007 77 attendees at a hugely successful RSG started off the language learning year in just the right way. Chris Green and Shelia O'Grady from Liverpool LA took us all through our paces in Spanish songs and rhymes (for KS1)and how to present traditional rhyme such as "There was an old lady who swallowed a fly." Chris Green challenged even those of us who are competent in the target language with IWB and PowerPoint games combining maths, literacy and language learning at KS2 in French. The invited publishers complemented the event with games, books and activities that encourage teachers to keep the fun in language learning but also to look to progression. Date: 29/11/2007 Teachers, KS4 pupils and foreign language assitants contributed to the success of this RSG. Teachers considered the use of signage and simple cultural activities to bring the target language culture into the classroom . Y11 pupils from William Beamont Sports College who are Junior Young Language Leaders, supported by their teachers, demonstrated how they are using their language skills to support local primary children learning French. The pupils demonstrated activities in Meadowside Primary School's purpose built virtual France room. Foreign Language Assistants from Lymm Language College were interviewed by the Primary Languages AST about their own experience of Primary School and asked to share Christmas festivities in France, Spain and Germany. Date: 31/1/08 Teachers from across Warrington LA gave presentations about different aspects of "reaching abroad". Janet Lloyd gave a short presentation on what "reaching abroad" could mean, from simple celebrations to intercultural lesson activities through to making links with abroad and possible CPD abroad. Katie Gallop AST looked at existing resources that primary teachers already had or would find easily accessible that would allow teachers and pupils to develop long term intercultural projects or provide short term learning opportunities. Miriam McKay gave a lively talk on the 500 Teacher Exchange to Munich. Vicky Jones, Y5 teacher/languages coordinator at Grappenhall Heys Primary School, explained how she weaves aspects of culture from Denmark (her native country) into everyday classroom routine and celebrations.Vicky showed gifts the children have received from their link school in Germany and she shared her plans and activities to support the whole school's German Christmas festival. Date: 06/03/2008 Secondary and Primary teachers were entertained and challenged by Carmel O'Hagan's presentation on the use of text to aid the transition between year 6 and year 7. Teachers were asked to consider ways of using text to develop links between primary and Secondary learning. A very well received session to aid the developing discussion between primary and secondary colleagues. Date: 24/04/2008 Janet Lloyd delivered a hands on, activity packed session on how to extend simple language learning activities through the use of drama and creativity across the curriculum. Teachers were challenged to think out of the box and look at how language learning could support other skills and activities in other parts of the curriculum.
