Title: Songs, rhymes and raps
Speaker: Jan Lewandowski, Independant Primary Languages Consultant

Jan entertained the crowds at Swindon on Wednesday 19th September - what a great start to the year! We were treated to fun finger rhymes, snazzy songs and wacky websites. Although we were all a little tired after a day's teaching, everyone got involved with firm favourites such as "Quelle est la date de ton anniversaire?" and "Frere Jacques". We also learnt some newer songs such as "AEIOU". Three lucky teachers went away with free music resources to use in their schools. Thank you Jan for all your ideas and enthusiasm!

Title: Getting inside the new QCA schemes of work
Venue: Oakfield Campus
Time: 4pm
Speaker: Michelle Panting, Primary Languages Consultant

Swindon teachers were introduced to the QCA units of work during this session. The importance of linking Primary Languages to work taking place in other areas of the curriculum was discussed and groups had time to explore a unit of their choosing and produce cross-curricular topic webs. This webs showed just how creative the teachers in Swindon are and will be made available to all on the South West Grid Portal.

Title: The International Dimension
Venue: Oakfield Campus
Time: 4pm
Speaker: Penny Krucker, Head of International Education & Swindon teachers

This session was packed with ideas of how to incorporate the intercultural understanding strand of the KS2 Framework for languages into the primary curriculum. Delegates were given lots of free resources that Penny brought with her from the International Education Centre in Gloucester. Teachers were encouraged to look on the Global Gateway website to find partner schools and to consider applying for the International School Award. At the end of the session, three Swindon schools shared their work, giving the delegates even more ideas.

Title: Teaching languages at Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1
Venue: Oakfield Campus
Time: 4pm
Speaker: Kate Coughlin

On a lovely sunny late afternoon, 42 teachers crammed into a very hot room to sample some Early Years French activities. We started by taking the register as wild animals sat on IKEA circular bath mats! We then learnt various songs and games that would be appropriate for children in Foundation Stage or Key Stage 1. One of the most popular activities was the 'poisson' game. The boite magique had everyone asking "Toc, toc, toc. Qui est la?" so that we could meet the amazing puppets that Kate has - including the very special rabbit! Participants also had the opportunity to browse published resources for Early Years from La Jolie Ronde as well as storybooks and the famous Dincrocs Hocus and Lotus.

Title: Let's get blogging
Venue: Oakfield Campus
Time: 4pm
Speaker: Heather Hunt, Primary Languages Leading Teacher

This was an extra RSG session that hadn't been planned for but demand for Heather to lead a session about blogging was so great, we couldn't disappoint! Heather gave us a tour of Multiply which her school use to keep in contact with their partner school in Poitiers, France. Delegates were then helped to set up their own blog site and shown how to upload documents, videos, audio files, photos etc. Most delegates already have partner schools either in Poitiers or Cordoba and have already started blogging!

Title: Sharing Good Practice
Venue: Oakfield Campus
Time: 4pm
Speaker: Michelle Panting, Consultant & Swindon Leading Teachers

This year's final Regional Support Group was an inspirational session that really got teachers thinking about ideas for European Day of Languages. Helen Marsh from Millbrook Primary School talked about how her school have taken part in the French language art competition that is run by the British Council each year. Rachael Clarke from Wanborough Primary School talked to us about how she has taught the Intercultural Understanding objectives from the Framework by hosting open days for pupils and their parents. During this year, her class have taken part in a Spanish carnival, making their own masks and creating their own dances. Heather Hunt from Liden Primary School talked to us about the Take One Picture week. The school chose a Japanese painting and spent more than a week looking at all areas of the curriculum. The children learnt some words in Japanese, created their own Japanese musical instruments and wrote their own Haiku poems. They also took part in an authentic tea ceremony.
