Belstead House, Ipswich - 08/10/07
Waveney House Hotel, Beccles - 18/10/2007
Suffolk RSG1 welcomed Debbie Abbs in Ipswich and Bury St. Edmunds and Caroline Herring in Beccles. Debbie and Caroline delivered a session on playground and parachute games and activities. Playground games in Primary Languages can be used to practise language recently acquired or to introduce new language; they also give children an opportunity to develop inter-cultural understanding and encourage them to work cooperatively in pairs, small groups and with the whole class.Debbie and Caroline demonstrated how playground games help to learn languages in an exciting and energetic way! General information was provided on the latest news from the world of primary languages, including local, regional and national developments.Participants' feed-back was extremely positive. A big thank you to Debbie and Caroline for three inspirational and fun sessions!

Title: Investigating Languages
Venue: Belstead House, Ipswich
Time: 16.30 - 18.00
Speaker: Sian James & Marina Dixon
Suffolk RSG 2 welcomed Sian James (Primary Languages Consultant) who delivered a session on the Coventry produced 'Investigating Languages' resources. Sian's session was inspiring as it focused on a different way of looking at the early language learning years. Those present were given a range of different approaches to raising pupils' awareness of similarities and differences between languages, highlighting cultural aspects of language learning and literacy links. The session was an active one with many opportunities to participate and lots of supplementary ideas demonstrating links to the Key Stage Two Framework for Languages. Delegates found the session stimulating and very useful.

Title: Planning a Languages Day
Venue: Belstead House, Ipswich
Time: 16.30 - 18.00
Speaker: Debbie Abbs & Marina Dixon
Why plan a Languages Day?
- To provide a variety of activities to use the language in real situations
- To provide information on traditions and culture
- To give the children the opportunity to socialize and familiarise themselves with High School (and address some transition issues...)
- To immerse children in another language and culture
Debbie showed us how to plan a Languages Day and gave us an array of ideas which really inspired everybody. We sang songs in French and Spanish, carried out a survey in German and enjoyed food from many different countries. We looked at how we can be inspired by the celebration of the Chinese New Year (great opportunities for challenging and fun cross-curricular activities). We looked at sports and games which can be incorporated in a Languages Day as well as Christmas and Easter cooking! Debbie also gave us a vast selection of useful websites. The feed-back from all the participants was extremely positive. Thank you Debbie!

Title: Making Languages Cross-Curricular
Venue: Belstead House, Ipswich
Time: 16.30 - 18.00
Speaker: Tara Deevoy & Marina Dixon
Suffolk RSG 4 was led by Tara Deevoy, Primary Languages Consultant for Medway and was presented in all three Suffolk geographical areas (South, West and North); all the sessions were well attended. Tara offered her expert advice and practical ideas on how to embed Primary Languages into the curriculum whilst giving links to the KS2 Framework
Tara's presentation was extremely entertaining; she was able to show how easy and rewarding it is to link primary languages work with other areas of the curriculum and how this makes Primary Languages learning and teaching more fulfilling and enjoyable.
Her lively and active session gave many practical ideas for class teachers and language specialists alike on providing real and practical contexts for children to learn and use language in an enjoyable and productive way. Many ideas were presented through songs and rhymes which are already familiar to the children.

Title: Primary Languages and the Interactive Whiteboard
Venue: Belstead House, Ipswich
Time: 16.30 - 18.00
Speaker: Wendy Adeniji & Marina Dixon
Wendy Adeniji, Primary Languages Consultant, has been training Modern Languages teachers for the last 10 years and now specialises in training primary teachers to make effective use of their interactive whiteboards.
The session started with useful hints and tips on how to make the best use of PowerPoint. Wendy showed us how to use certain features to transform a static presentation into a really interactive one. We learned brilliant ideas on how to use the interactive whiteboard to present stories, songs, vocabulary, the target language culture and games to children. She gave an overview of the possibilities inside both the Smart and Promethean programmes for both teacher and pupil activities. As usual, general information was provided on the latest news from the world of Primary Languages, including local, regional and national developments. Participants feed-back was extremely positive. The session was presented in all three Suffolk geographical areas.
