Title: Salsa
Venue: Salvation Army, Psalter Lane, Sheffield
Time: 16.00 - 18.30
Speaker: Sheena Brabazon

On Thursday 24 January a group of teachers - including 2 brave men - were entertained by Sheena, who instructed us in some basic salsa steps and sugested ideas on how to use them with pupils in KS2. Having learned these steps, Sheena then took us through a number of very easy routines. Although there were a few experienced dancers present, most of us were complete beginners, but we managed to follow the routines and had a really enjoyable time. There was some discussion on what language might be used to make this a true cross-curricular activity, and all agreed that it would be achievable. Following Sheena's input, we looked at the French Dance DVD produced by Yannick Minvielle-Debat, who presented a workshop for South Yorkshire RSG in Autumn 2006. The format of the DVD was explained and we looked in detail at the first dance, the Farandole. This DVD has the advantage of a glossary of French vocabulary, and Yannnick can be heard speaking clearly in French in some of the sections.

Title: Using Puppets in Primary Language Lessons
Venue: Salvation Army, Psalter Lane, Sheffield
Time: 16.00 - 18.30
Speaker: Debbie Knights; Chris Foster, Lincoln Puppet Theatre

Debbie talked about the work she has done using familiar stories. She demonstrated how a story could be used to develop all strands of the KS2 Framework, using a range of structures and topics. Pupils created puppets to stimulate speaking and listening work and followed this with a closer look at the text, sequencing sentences and making their own book.

The main presentation provided a whirlwind tour of puppets which lend themselves to classroom use. Chris demonstrated how simple materials including ping pong balls, gloves, paper bags and plates, oven gloves and pan scourers can be used to produce effective and eye catching puppets. He also showed colleagues how to make shadow puppets and set up a simple screen. The session finished with practical puppet-making session. Feedback was overwhelmingly positive. Teachers left with an insight into how puppets could be used to engage learners and ideas for making their own puppets.

Title: International Links
Venue: Bannerdale Centre, Sheffield
Time: 16.00 - 18.30
Speaker: Celia Robbins and local teachers

Despite a national strike by NUT members, this meeting was well attended. It began with two local teachers who gave 15 minute presentations on their experiences of Comenius funded projects abroad. Helen Routh participated in the Madrid Bilingual project in 2006 and her school now has good links with a Spanish school. Ann Farrar took part in the 2 Week Primary Teacher Project to Dijon in France last year, and shared her experiences and photos with those present. Celia Robbins, who is funded by the British Council to deliver international training, then gave a very interesting and informative presentation on International Links and the International School Award. There was a lot of interest expressed in this award, and Celia was able to answer many questions.

Title: The Language Factory
Venue: Bannerdale Centre, Sheffield
Time: 16.00 - 18.30
Speaker: Carole Nichols

Carole Nicholl from 'The Language Factory' presented a well-attended session in which all present joined in singing - and dancing - to Carole's songs and raps. Great fun was had by all! Carole demonstrated songs in a variety of languages and talked about how easily pupils pick up the words when accompanied by tunes and rhythms. She showed some film of pupils using the resource in the classroom. This was the last session in the 2007-8 programme, and was a great way to end the year.
