Please contact Nicole Valencia at NRV@SHSB.demon.co.uk or on 08445 7 8700 for further information on Southend RSG. Regular sessions are held at different venues around Southend-on-Sea. Date: 17/10/2007 This was a lively session led by the Southend PML Delivery Team which is made up of SLC outreach staff and cross-phase teachers. Attendees came prepared, wearing tracksuits and trainers and were put through their paces doing PE and parachute activities in French and German. The session kicked off with Disko Zahlen in the round - where numbers were linked to a gesture to provide a visual prompt for pupils. From there, key instructions required in PE were introduced through a variety of activities, involving music and a healthy competitive element. Finally a 12 man parachute was used to demonstrate its various uses, from laying it on the ground and walking around it to playing fruit salad. It was also demonstrated how to use the parachute to help tell the time on the hour and practise weather expressions - both activities requiring a lot of team work. Colleagues left inspired to try out using PE as a means of reinforcing language that they are teaching during their PML lessons. Date: 27/11/2007 Despite the technology not working, Jan Lewandowski demonstrated a variety of activities to show progression in reading and writing from Year 3 to Year 6 using more reliable, old-fashioned methods. It was a lively, interactive session with colleagues participating in songs and stories. Good tips were given on where to look for new and interesting websites. The ideas for using the paintings of Arcimboldo also certainly provided much food for thought - no pun intended! Nicole Valencia from the Southend primary languages team led a very useful and interesting session focussing on some of the latest resources for the interactive whiteboard. The main thrust of her session was to demonstrate how adaptable such resources were - i.e. very user freindly, can be used as stand alone resources or to complement a scheme of work, can be used to provide the native speaker voice in the classsroom for less confident teachers and also provide the confidence to do activities that are often kept for specialist teachers, i.e. read a book. The session demonstrated the Talking Pen, LCP, Big e-books, Talking Books and EdPax resources. Rigolo was also shown and at the end of the session colleagues were able to have a play on the computers and IWB to try the resources out themselves. A detailed handout also pointed colleagues in the direction of a couple of very useful subscription-only websites which are ideal for use on the IWB. Date: 12/03/2008 This lively session gave the attendees a chance to sing, dress up, dance and show off their best acting voices, all in the cause of French! The team presented a variety of practical activities: a song rendition of 'La Belle au Bois Dormant' with props and actions, a simple dramatic script in French on the theme of pollution, inspired by a German children book, 'Da ist eine wunderschöne Wiese' and finally an introduction to French folk dancing with 'Jean Petit qui danse'. Handouts for each activity listed relevant resources, pointed out links to the KS2 Framework objectives and gave colleagues ideas for extension and cross-curricular use. The session ended with an introduction of the child friendy Digiblue camera. 5 volunteers offered to trial it with their classes and show results at our next session. So look out for budding directors and their schools' versions of 'Le Fermier dans son Pré'. Date: 20/05/2008 In a bid to widen the language experience of primary children, the team decided to explore a multilingual approach to MFL that can sit alongside a specific MFL curriculum. The aim of this approach is to lay strong foundations for language learning, support links with Literacy and develop language awareness cross-curricularly. After a general presentation on possible curricular links and top tips on the approach, practical examples were given for Latin and Italian (and their links to French and English and the Romans) followed by a logic game on German numbers, an exercise in word classification based on roots (French/English/German) and even a test of our expertise in Cockney (link to the Victorians). The attendees were then introduced to the Coventry project and the Language Investigator website before being given ideas on how to organise a Eurovision Song contest, a language 'Speed Dating' event and a session on exploring bilingual books. Our colleagues left with a lot of food for thought and, in some cases, Talking Pen materials and 5 language visual dictionaries won in the raffle! Date: 09/07/2008 Southend RSG welcomed Jan Lewandowski back for the last session of the year to look at ways in which La Fête Nationale and the EDL can be exploited in school. We had one of our biggest turn outs for this session with 40 Primary and Secondary colleagues in attendance. Jan certainly didn't disappoint! Attendees were treated to a lively interactive session which saw them designing their own impressionist pictures of La Fête Nationale, making succinct information booklets and singing variations of the Marseillaise. A plethora of ideas were given for celebrating the EDL and attendees left with their arms full of free goodies to use in the classroom.
