Title: Resource review
Speaker: Jayne Wright, Jo Sowerbutts

In this session we looked at resources, both published and home made and particularly at the CILT pathfinders. Jayne Wright (Advisory teacher and AST) showed us how she has used ideas from the Pathfinder "Grammar is Fun" to meet Year 4 KAL objectives and how she incorporated these into a unit of work. She also looked at "We have the Technology" and went on to show how she had expoited a song from "Chante en francais" She showed us some lovely examples of children doing roleplays using language from the song. She then had us singing an elephant song in Spanish with actions. This song is from a CD from the Spanish Embassy. Jo Sowerbutts (Advisory teacher) demonstrated how to encourage early reading and writing using ideas in "First steps to Reading and writing" We finished with a song about Halloween in Spanish from "Espanol, Espanol" and looked at the teaching ideas in this resource. We were pleased to have 17 people attend as we had just had a conference within the authority.

Title: Using the QCA in Year 4 and Countdown to Christmas.
Venue: The Ridings High School
Time: 4pm-6pm
Speaker: Michelle Panting, Primary Languages Consultant, Swindon LA

Michelle Panting from Swindon enthused and informed us with a session focusing on the year 4 QCA unit "L'argent de poche". We started by looking closely at the year 4 objectives and using a "traffic light" system to highlight our own familiarity and confidence when delivering them. Michelle then showed us what the unit might look like in the classroom, adding her own tried and tested acitivities and giving us some wonderful websites!! We all went away feeling that the unit could be delivered using mimimum resources and maximum impact - we couldn't wait to play "The price is right!" Many thanks to Michelle for this fabulous session!

Title: Learning French through singing and dancing
Venue: The Ridings High School
Time: 4pm-6pm
Speaker: Yannick Minvielle-Debat

We began the session with a "Top Tip Share" where particiapnts were ginen a raffle ticket for their contributions. Then Yannick Minvielle-Debat treated us to an inspiring workshop on how to teach traditional Breton dance. She outlined the rationale for including dance in the curriculum and then went on to teach us a a range of dances. I am confident that the interest and enthusiasm generated will be evident soon throughout our schools and really grateful to Yannick for her input. At the end of the session we raffled off two copies of the dance dvd but also purchased additional copies to loan to RSG attendees on a half termly basis.

Title: Digiblues and QCA
Venue: The Ridings High School
Time: 4pm-6pm
Speaker: Jo Sowerbutts, Jayne Wright

The session began with a look at the latest version of the digiblue camera and a hands on demonstration of how to use it. Some of these cameras have been purchased for RSG attendees and will be made available on loan. Jayne and Jo then outlined how the cameras might be used in a primary languages lesson, looking at their application to assessment for learning, how they can be used in plenaries to encourage children to think about Language Learning Strategies as well as their use for unit outcomes.
Examples outlined were linked closely to the updated QCA schemes of work. Cameras were loaned out along with suggestions for their use to try out on condition that people would come back and share the results.

Title: Assessing Primary Languages
Venue: Riverside. Bowling Hill. Chipping Sodbury.
Time: 4.30-6pm
Speaker: Vivienne May, Asset Languages

We were pleased to welcome Vivienne May from Assett Languages who ran a session on progression and assessment using the Languages Ladder. Vivienne reminded us of the benefits of assessment for recognising children's achievement as well as ensuring progression. It was valuable for us all to think about what the children are learning in terms of skills and ways in which they can be given opportunities to use and refine these skills. The session gave us some interesting insights into how schools may go forward in terms of assessment and lead to some valuable discussion. We are extremely grateful to Vivienne for coming all the way from Cambridge.

Title: Resources swap shop.
Venue: Riverside. Bowling Hill. Chipping Sodbury.
Time: 4.30-6pm
Speaker: Jo Sowerbutts, Jayne Wright.

We began the session with a "website warm up" where attendees had to match website addresses with useful information. We then looked at some of the work teachers had done with children using the digiblue cameras. Attendees then looked at the needs of their school and identified resources that might be needed in different year groups using an audit sheet.
We looked closely at some sample lessons from the Wakefield scheme of work and at parts of Early Start part 2. We then had resources on tables and loaded up onto laptops to browse. Participants felt that his was a good time to look at resources especially as all have recently received some money for their primary languages budget. Thanks to Jane Edwards, Rowenna Hanham and Clare Smith for their input. It is always hugely useful for others to see what is going on in the classroom!
