Regular sessions are held around Sefton.

Date: 05/11/2007
Title: Using Sonica Spanish
Venue: St Oswald's CE Primary School, Ronald Ross Avenue, Netherton, Liverpool, L30 5RH
Time: 3:30 - 5:30pm
Speaker: Phil Cartwright

The training event was organised as a large number of Primary schools in Sefton have recently purchased Sonica Spanish to support their delivery of Spanish. At the training event, speakers from Sonica Spanish were invited to deliver a session in order to familiarise participants with the programme. Participants were given a brief overview of some of the functions of the software, including the use of the dancemat, pupil tracking and the range of activities on offer. Overall, the training did not offer teachers as many practical suggestions as to how to use the program in class as a teaching tool as had been hoped.

Title: Getting Languages Into The Primary School For Non Specialist Teachers
Venue: Sefton PDC, Formby
Time: 3:45 - 5:45pm
Speaker: Sarah Bailey and Ana Lopez Thomas

This training event was aimed at teachers who had little or no experience of teaching a foreign language in primary schools, with the aim of providing them with some simple, cross curricular activities which they could deliver in class. The session was divided into two parts; the first being an overview of government expectations for language teaching in primary schools for 2009, an overview of the role of the MFL co-ordinator and an introduction to the new Framework for KS2 languages. The second half of the course gave a much more practical demonstration as to how non-specialists can introduce a language into their everyday classroom routine (register, greetings, colours, numbers etc). A range of games and songs were introduced and enjoyed by all! Feedback from participants was highly positive, with the practical delivery of the session being seen as a particular strength.

Title: Teaching Spanish in KS2 through ICT and Story
Venue: Holy Family Catholic Primary School
Time: 3:45 - 6.00pm
Speaker: Wendy Adeniji

Wendy Adenjini focused on how to teach Spanish stories using ICT. The course was extremely practical with Wendy starting off talking us through some of the PowerPoints she uses with primary children to teach basic Spanish and traditional tales such as 3 little pigs, Red Riding Hood etc. She then showed us how to set up our own templates for stories using PowerPoint and Smartboard software, adding in appropriate Spanish accessed form the internet. By the end of the session we all had made a PowerPoint ready to use in class, and as a staff had a whole bank of stories ready for chidren that very week.

The session focussed on the implications of early language teaching on Primary to Secondary Transition. The session included a case study of an extremely successful transition scheme between Lander Road Primary and Litherland High School.
