Title: Classroom instructional language and improving pronunciation
Speaker: Emma Read

The session started with Emma Read focusing on effective use of learning phonics in French. We placed these with actions to help children remember, e.g. 'un' the action was a seal clapping. We then looked at numbers and commands and placed these with actions too. This was then practised with a partner. We looked at the pronounciation of numbers and how these can be related to the pronounciation of other key vocabulary used in the classroom. We discussed how much French is used in the classroom and watched a DVD demonstrating good practice of French in a lesson. We shared opinions about effective games to play e.g. Chinese whispers and other games relating to classroom commands. We all took part in the game 'Le chef d'orchestre and discussed resources such as the 'Early Start' magazine pack. The session was good fun and very interactive giving lots of good ideas to try out in class.

Title: Assessment in MFL at Key Stage 2
Venue: Archdeacon Cambridge CE Primary, The Green, Twickenham
Time: 4pm - 5.30pm
Speaker: Anne Farren & Christine Capon

Christine started the session by showing a selection of story books which could be used as a stimulus for all ages. We took part in an assessment activity involving three people, 1 as a teacher and the others as children. This was a good way for children to adopt the necessary language skills and vocabulary and provided a good insight into their thinking. Anne provided a sorting activity which demonstrated the five factors that improve learning through assessment. Encouraging children to be a part of their learning and target setting was highlighted as one important factor. We were shown some useful assessment portfolios for children including 'My Language Biography' (on the CILT website) which involved children in their learning. Christine talked to the group about 'The Lingua Badge Award' and we watched a video showing activities which can be done with Year 6. The session was very informative and gave the group ideas for assessing and involving children in their learning.

Title: Cross-curricular links - ICT in MFL
Venue: Archdeacon Cambridge CE Primary School, The Green, Twickenham
Time: 4pm-5.30pm
Speaker: Christine Capon

The session looked at using ICT as a tool for MFL learning and also using MFL to teach ICT. Various useful websites were shown demonstrating interactive games as well as resources for downloading. Christine Capon showed a PowerPoint, 'Je vais au supermarché,' involving sound which could be easily created by Year 5 children. She also showed a free to download program called Photostory3 and how Year 6 children could easily create their own short story looking at a French town. Manish Kothari (ICT Co-ordinator) showed the group 'Information Magic' which could be used for Year 4 linking MFL to creating a French cheeses database. He also showed how Year 5 pupils could create a French town using hyperlinks and PowerPoint. At the end of the session the group was able to look at and try out the CD-ROMs (Petit-Pont, Task Magic and Rigolo) which were shown in the session. Many people found this to be very useful and the session received lots of positive feedback.

Title: Practical Ideas Exchange - Sharing good practice in MFL
Venue: Trafalgar Junior School, Elmsleigh Road, Twickenham
Time: 4pm - 5.30pm
Speaker: Local MFL Teachers

This was a relaxed, informal session, where people got to share ideas for the classroom. Faith Polya showed how she had used holiday photos to introduce language and talk about culture. Liz Cox talked about the link her school has with a school in France, Candy Taylor gave us resources and activity ideas for a Spanish club, Carol Fletcher talked about how they have French running through her school but also 6-week taster sessions in a variety of other languages and cultures. Penny Madoc-Jones gave us great ideas for language reinforcement activities, ideas for using bi-lingual dictionaries and how activities can be cross curricular. The session conculded with Christine Capon updating people on future sessions, requests for ideas for the next academic year and also drawing attention to other courses being run during the summer term. Everyone agreed that it had been a really worthwhile session.

Title: Cross curricular links - Music and MFL
Venue: Richmond Music Trust, Briar Road, Twickenham
Time: 4.00pm - 5.30pm
Speaker: Shiela Johnson

This was a very practical session led by Shiela Johnston from Richmond Music Trust, looking at how music and singing can be used to teach MFL. It was aimed at both music and MFL co-ordinators. Those attending got to join in with a wide variety of songs from different sources, both published resources and Shiela's own ideas. We got to explore how songs can reinforce language taught in the language lesson and also explore which music objectives were being covered in these activities. The group also got to look at and listen to a resource published by Camden looking at world music and songs, which was collated from families living in Camden. Christine Capon concluded the session by summarising the sessions which had taken place this year and asking for any particular requests for the next academic year. People then had the opportunity to network over a cool drink and some nibbles.
