Regular sessions are held at different venues
around Liverpool. Date: 07/11/2007 30 delegates arrived at a festively decorated Toxteth Annexe to take part in a Christmas RSG delivered by Liverpool Advisory Teachers Vicky Carlin and Jane Halsall. Hot drinks and mince pies ensured all were ready to get into the Christmas Spirit. Vicky Carlin showed us some inventive ways to teach the Christmas vocabulary using cuddly toys and flashcards. Also proving popular was a demonstration of some fantastic numeracy group games using some wrapped up Christmas presents. Jane Halsall showed us the best way to tell a story linking Christmas, Weather and Days of the Week and then played a detective game of Christmas Cluedo. Who killed Father Christmas?! A Nativity Scene with Mary, Joseph, Baby Jesus and Innkeeper was acted out by eager participants and the session rounded off with a good old festive sing-a-long. A surprise appearance from Père Noël himself was the highlight of the early evening session and all attendees received some very early Christmas presents! Date: 22/11/2007 "Getting Started" was a fantastic RSG held in Judith Hastings' inspirational classroom at Ditton Primary School in Halton. Judith showed us imaginative ways to immerse a foreign language into the daily classroom life, such as making use of 'Travelling Ted', signage, and an abundance of French realia. Language Support Teacher Sarah Downes demonstrated a hands on way of practising the colours in French, using multi-link cubes. She also taught us a clever method of learning the French alphabet, which lead on to some fun spelling games using mini-whiteboards. Gaynor Hamkin (Language Support) demonstrated flashcard activities and competitive games to help teach new vocabulary. Delegates all had fun 'repeating if true' and using actions for the Christmas Characters. We all enjoyed playing a 'fruit salad' style game with a Christmas theme! Attendees appreciated seeing first hand the resources (most home made!) in the Year 3/4 classroom and templates provided by Judith were much appreciated. Date: 06/02/2008 "This Works" was a fantastic session where our ASTs Albert Miller, Teresa Miller and Barbara Gleave shared some of their best kept secrets with the group! Barbara showed us some fantastic PowerPoints where the children were encouraged to sing along to alphabet songs, categorise letters into groups and improve their dictionary skills. Jane Halsall marched us around the classroom to the alphabet beat and Jayne Patten progressed on to a fun word game where letters were pulled from a bag and unjumbled to form a word. Albert Miller shared some of his favourite Spanish songs with us, including 10 botellas verdes and some catchy tunes to accompany the ever popular Hungry Caterpillar story. Teresa Miller told us a beautiful Spring story which all delegates seemed eager to take into their own classroom. Jane Massey from LCP was present to exhibit some new primary language resources. Evaluations from the Toxteth Annexe based session were very positive. All attendees received handouts/resources. Date: 17/04/2008 Were were delighted to welcome Primary Languages Consultant Janet Lloyd from Warrington LA to our Toxteth based RSG. Janet wowed everybody with a fun and lively session on Drama and Creativity. Amongst the many ideas we all took away was "3D Art". Renoir's "Luncheon at the Boating Party" was used as an example of how we can link language learning to art, drama and culture. Delegates chose a character to represent from the painting and said a sentence in French which they thought the character might be thinking. Another popular activity, according to evaluations, was "Commanding Puppets" where someone holds a "puppet" on an imaginary string and gives them actions to follow. Janet also taught us how to add "sound spaces" and European role play areas to our Classroom and enlightened us with wonderful ideas to bring "The Bear Hunt" story to life. We left the session motivated and inspired - ready to rethink and explore our MFL teaching in a new light whilst "thinking outside of the box!" Date: 18/06/2008 27 attendees participated in this Wednesday after school session. Jane and Maria soon had us warming up, stretching and before we knew it lying on the floor head to toe as "Sardinas" in groups of 4, 6, 3 or 9! Even the German Specialists quickly learnt their body parts in French and Spanish as we played the Hoop body part game. Our listening skills were challenged as Jane shouted out not only a body part, but also a colour of Hoop for us to put that body part into! If the children could see us now! Playing "Earthquake" symbolizes how teaching MFL through PE can add a new dimension to an otherwise dull grammar topic. Prepositions such as devant, dans and derriere are learnt through an agile, fun group game building houses with our bodies. Children listen out for their preposition and swap with another "house", but if the teacher calls tremblement de terre all children have to swap and build new houses. Whoever tells you grammar is boring is wrong - learning prepositions has never been so much fun!
