Title: Developing Teacher Expertise in PML. Ideas and ways to keep on developing and improving your language skills and methodology
Venue: Garstang Golf and Country Hotel
Time: 4.30 - 6.00
Speaker: Gail Bowskill, Jackie Kellet, Helen Speakman, Norma Tempan

16 people turned out to listen to Jackie Kellet explain how every teacher in her Primary school has taken on the delivery of PML in the classroom. She talked about the training provided and support involved and then gave some ideas for classroom activities which got everyone involved and joining in. Norma Tempan and Helen Speakman spoke about the residential courses at St Omer and Besancon and also got the group joining in one or two activities. This was followed by Gail Bowskill talking about how she has trained over 40 primary teachers to deliver PML to their own class based on a coaching model. Gail works as the outreach teacher for Ripley St Thomas Specialist Languuge College in Lancaster. She then took us through a unit of work showing how she builds in use of the target language for non specialist teachers.

Title: Developing Teacher Expertise in PML. Ideas and ways to keep on developing and improving your language skills and methodology
Venue: Farington Lodge, Farington, Leyland
Time: 4.30 - 6.00
Speaker: Gail Bowskill and Janet Starr

27 people were treated to a wonderful session by Jan Starr talking about her experiences on the course for Spanish teachers in Tordesillas. Jan was very inspiring - not least because she had no knowledge of Spanish 2 months prior to the course. She is PML coordinator in her school and was planning on French until she found a great reason to learn Spanish!! From a base of 0 language she talked about how she built up her basic knowledge then showed us some video clips and activities from the course. This was followed by Gail Bowskill talking about how she has trained over 40 primary teachers to deliver PML to their own class based on a coaching model. Gail works as the outreach teacher for Ripley St Thomas Specialist Language College in Lancaster. She then took us through a unit of work showing how she builds in use of the target language for non specialist teachers and got us all joining in with an excellent and entertaining PowerPoint based on Jacques et les haricots magiques.

Title: The Training Zone website: Linking into Creativity in the Primary Strategy
We will look at planning and activities for primary languages with reference to the national PML Training Zone.
Venue: Alder Grange High School Rawtenstall
Time: 4.30 - 6.00
Speaker: Chrissy White

Chrissy White delivered a very informative session on using the KS2 Framework and the Training Zone website to help with planning both short term and long term. She interspersed this with some Christmas activities which everyone joined in. The session was limited to 20 participants because we were using an ICT room and had to stick to H & S regulations but at one point we nearly had to sneak some more chairs in. Participants really enjoyed having hands-on time to explore the Training Zone website and discuss ideas with a partner. To finish off the Christmas theme Lebkuchen and Stollen were given out as prizes.

Title: Languages in Context: New ideas for linking modern languages objectives to other curriculum areas.
Venue: Farington Lodge, Farington, Leyland
Time: 4.30 - 6.00
Speaker: Helen Kent, NW Comenius Regional PML Consultant

The group of 31 warmly welcomed Helen Kent to the meeting and heard a wonderful account of how a language could be used as the vehicle for teaching other content in the primary curriculum. She outlined in particular a music topic based on the life and work of Johann Strauss II (with great video examples of children doing a Waltz) and work done on The Rainbow Fish. Links to both music objectives and also KS2 Framework objectives were made explicit. Following that Helen gave examples of using a language in PE warm-up activities, looked at a few resources aimed specifically at this area and looked at the examples of teaching the planets which can be found on the Primary Languages website. A short discussion followed and teachers left feeling very positive and enthusiastic about going away and trying some of the ideas themselves.

Title: Using the new QCA scheme of work for Key Stage 2
Venue: Clayton Park Conference Centre, Clayton le Moors
Time: 4.30 - 5.45 pm
Speaker: Jane Hegedus PML Consultant Lancashire

A group of 15 came along to sunny Accrington for this session on using the QCA scheme of work. We looked primarily at units 3 and 4 and at a wealth of activities and resources which could be used to exploit the activities in the units further or make explicit links to literacy, art, music and science. Participants were shown resources such as big books, talking big books and Nigel's famous change bag among others. All activities were linked explicitly to the Year 3 KS2 Framework objectives and expectations and outcomes for Year 3. Participants were very appreciative of the wealth of ideas they could take away and try out with their classes.

Title: Practical ideas for integrating ICT into PML.
Venue: Alder Grange High School, Rawtenstall
Time: 4.30 - 6.00
Speaker: Sarah Delattre AST Alder Grange Technology College, Rawtenstall.

Have you ever sat and watched someone doing fantastic things with technology and wished you either a) could do similar things or b) knew where to even start to create such inspiring and motivating resources?

22 people were lucky enough to be at the RSG session at Woodlands Conference Centre to see Sarah Delattre, an MFL AST, first of all show us some examples of activities, then explain and demonstrate how to create them using a range of software. She showed us some of the perhaps lesser used features of PowerPoint and then worked with us to create similar materials to use immediately in the classroom. She also showed us how to incorporate sound files to make the materials more appealing to learners. This session certainly had the 'wow' factor and everyone went away with heads buzzing, clutching their handouts, determined to go away and put the fabulous ideas into practice immediately. Even I made 7 PowerPoints that night!
