Regular sessions are held at different venues around
Hertfordshire. Date: 28/11/2007 It was a pleasure to welcome Jan to the Hertfordshire Development Centre for this very enjoyable and informative session. Jan stimulated delegates' interest by asking them to consider the many cognates of the word "fête" and then highlighted resources and ideas for celebrating Christmas and other festivals around the world. Delegates appreciated the many easy to use activities and websites that Jan presented as well as the chocolate Euro money and the bonhommes de neige that they made as takeaways! Date: 28/02/2008 Delegates appreciated the opportunity to look at the Framework objectives and consider activities which would allow a broad range of differentiation so that pupils can achieve at levels appropriate to their experience and ability. Drawing parallels with other curricular areas, the presentation focused on the importance of avoiding unnecessary repetition and recycling language in fresh contexts. Many thanks to Tanners Wood School for hosting this session. Date: 05/03/2008 Caroline Herring, Hertfordshire primary languages AST and Comenius East KS2 consultant, was the speaker at this well attended session. Interactive throughout, delegates went away with a wealth of ideas for playground and parachute games. The feedback was very positive. Comments included: "Really enthused, fantastic!" " I will use some of the games and convert them to Hebrew" "Lots of ideas to put into practice, fantastic!""Lovely ideas...I will now hunt out a cheap small parachute" "It has given me some excellent ideas for games to complement my French teaching!" Many thanks to Commonswood School for hosting this session. Date: 12/03/2008 Drawing parallels with other curricular areas, the presentation focused on the importance of avoiding unnecessary repetition and recycling language in fresh contexts. Delegates had the opportunity to look at the Framework objectives and consider activities which would allow a broad range of differentiation so that pupils can achieve at levels appropriate to their experience and ability, for example by assigning different roles and activities to a mixed age group performing a role play. Many thanks to St John the Baptist School for hosting this session. Date: 17/04/2008 Delegates came from a variety of mixed age settings and appreciated the opportunity to look at the Framework objectives and consider activities which would allow a broad range of differentiation so that pupils can achieve at levels appropriate to their experience and ability. Drawing parallels with other curricular areas, the presentation focused on the importance of avoiding unnecessary repetition and recycling language in fresh contexts so as to ensure progression whilst not disadvantaging the learners new to the cohort. Many thanks to Kimpton Primary School for hosting this session. Date: 15/05/2008 *CANCELLED* Date: 12/06/2008 It was a pleasure to welcome Nick Warren, Headteacher of Park Royal Primary school in Macclesfield, to the Hertfordshire Development Centre. Nick shared his evangelical passion for early language learning with delegates, using some of the clips from the Primary Languages website. Nick explained how to involve the whole school community, including bi-lingual parents and non-specialist staff. Feedback from delegates was very positive and they appreciated the CD of resources Nick had prepared for them as well as the many ideas for raising the profile of languages on the European Day of Languages. Date: 03/07/2008 It was a pleasure to welcome back to Hertfordshire Joan Dickie, Primary Languages Adviser for Norfolk. Joan explained how the Hocus and Lotus resource developed from research carried out at the University of Rome by child psychologist, Professor Traute Taeschner. The resource capitalises on young children's desire to hear the same story again and again and to become active participants in the story. To the amusement of onlooking parents, Joan took the delegates outside at St Mary's School Royston to act out the first story of the series in Italian. By following Joan's example, acting the story out and repeating the Italian, delegates were better able to understand the importance of involvement in the story and repetition. None of the delegates had prior knowledge of Italian, but were able to anticipate what language would be coming next in the story and appreciate that if children were to see the video of the story and act it out many times, they would absorb the language.
