Title: Stars and Planets
Venue: The Hucclecote Centre, Gloucester

This session was full of ideas for fun and exciting cross curricular activities for the primary language classroom on the theme of Stars and Planets related to the new QCA scheme of work. Nine participants won copies of the planet resources created for the training, in the free raffle. Participants, in small groups, discussed the "Hot Topic" of the new scheme of work. Free EU flag bunting was distributed.

Title: 'Songs and Stories - why and how?'

Irene Wilkie from Comenius South West led the training session on Songs and Stories. She began with an introduction on the importance and relevance of stories, including examples of classroom practice for Three Little Pigs, Going on a Bearhunt and others in Spanish and French, using visual aids and repetition. The hot topic of celebrating Christmas was discussed briefly and resources shared. The raffle winners received flashcards to support this. A brief reminder of future training opportunities was given.

Title: ' Bonjour tout le monde!'.. then what?

With many primary teachers concerned about their level of French "Bonjour tout le Monde - then what" included a presentation from David Buckland from Teachers Talking French on the 6 CD language learning pack. David outlined the method of teaching, range of language covered and relevance to KS2 Framework. The "hot topic" for this session was classroom language and a list of language used and required in class was compiled from suggestions from the participants. The main raffle of a TTF pack, donated by TTF, was won by one of the secondary schools running a Primary Language Support Group - in an ideal position to share it with her group of 8 primary schools. Information on susequent training opportunities was also provided.

Title: "So much to do, so little time!"

This session began with ideas for delivering the Intercultural Understanding element of language provision including e-twinning, Comenius and other school linking, international events etc, presented by Penny Krucker, International Education Officer, Gloucestershire. There were then some short activities to reinforce Language Learning Skills with a look at language patterns, which were followed by a look at using other areas of the curriculum to support primary languages - ideas for music, maths and PE. The session closed with the Hot Topic " Easter around the world".

Title: Are you sitting comfortably? - big books and ICT

This session started with a discussion on the advantages and learning outcomes from use of big books in language lessons. A brief look at European Schoolbooks and Rigolo bookbooks was complemented by examples of electronic big books created by primary teachers using Photostory 3 and other computer based programmes. Guidance on and reasons for creating own stories was given.

The "hot topic" discussion on activities for the European Day of Languages gave rise to some excellent ideas and the 2003 CILT EDL quiz entertained! EU resources, training opportunities, CILT publications were distributed.
