Regular
sessions at Carr House Centre, Doncaster. Our first session of the year was certainly a 'hands on' event, as Emma Wilson from Doncaster Artists in to Schools helped us, through much hilarity, to make scarecrows. Celebrating the European Day of Languages, the focus being on the 'Brussels Scarecrow Festival' held around this time every year, we set to work creating 'sculptures' to represent different countries and cultures. Inspired by photographs of the festival the teachers thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to target Intercultural Understanding objectives in such a creative way. Photographs of the finished products can be viewed at www.doncasterlea.org.uk. Date: 26/11/2007 Our Christmas RSG was once again awash with panettone and lebkuchen! A great turnout to see Edwina Teipoarii, our Leading Primary Languages Assistant, enchant us with her presentation about her native Tahiti and how Christmas is celebrated so differently over there. Father Christmas arriving by canoe and pictures of meat on the barbeque made this November night feel all the more inclement! Many industrious teachers rose to the challenge to make a Tahitian Christmas flower garland, which we hope will replace the traditional party hat in schools this year! Mayte Garcia, another third year assistant, then followed with a presentation about Christmas in Spain and the all so important rules of drinking cava, wearing gold, and also red underwear for a prosperous New Year! Many thanks to them both. Date: 29/01/2008 A great mix of teachers and teaching assistants attended our third Regional Support Group of the year. The Primary Languages Training Zone was our focus, with Anne Gregory from York leading a very practical and enjoyable session. A 'treasure hunt' of the site enabled the teachers to experience the resources available for themselves, and identify areas they would like to investigate further. Many thanks to Ann. Date: 10/03/2008 John MacNutt from Asset Languages reminded us of the benefits to assessing children using this scheme and led an animated and informative discussion. With thanks to Liz Nicholas from Armthorpe School we are now hosting our own Cluster Support Groups, which Liz was able to introduce and explain to the group. Similarly the primaries were represented by Dave Martin from Kingfisher, sharing his knowledge and experiences in using Asset with his children. The session certainly gave us food for thought as to how we may move on with the scheme and how the LA can support schools in doing that. Date: 12/05/2008 With Part 3 of The KS2 Framework and HMI subject inspections on the agenda, this was definitely a 'down to serious business' meeting! An incredibly well attended session, teachers considered in depth the guidelines for long, medium and short term planning and how, as an authority we interpret those. Schools were keen to learn about recent subject inspections in neighbouring authorities and take examples away of how a coordinators file can be set up and maintained. Date: 01/07/2008 Our final RSG session of the year was a relaxed affair, with sandwiches and buns to celebrate a very successful year for Primary Languages in Doncaster! This session was an opportunity for teachers, FLAs and TAs to have their opportunity to share successful resources, websites and teaching ideas. Amongst the presentations was a 'Dear Zoo' play performed beautifully by teachers themselves! A lovely end to a busy year.
