Although we did not have a large group at the meeting it was reassuring to see some familiar faces and have the knowledge that primary languages is alive and well in the Furness area. Ways of bringing MFL into the everyday classroom were discussed, from responses the register, to labelling paint pots in their appropriate foreign language, to having the date displayed in two or more languages on the board. The internet connection was being rather temperamental in the classroom we were using, however all present were given a booklet containing facts about French, German, Spanish, Italian etc Christmas traditions and an overview of what each website listed contained and how this could be exploited for use in the primary classroom. An emphasis was placed on comparisons and similarities that could be made in order to also widen the pupil's cultural knowledge, rather than just vocabulary learning. Date: 15/01/2008 Many thanks to Helen Kent for her wonderful session on the use of storytelling as a tool for primary langauges. We were introduced to many well known stories in their foreign versions and given information on where to purchase the books and how to use them as a basis for topic teaching (colours, foods etc). The meeting was not particularly well attended, which was disappointing as this was a very useful talk. Date: 05/03/2008 Although we had yet another poor attendance number, those attending were able to discuss information and workshops visited at the CILT Primary Languages Show. We looked at the use of the moving image as a technique for teaching languages, and ways of storing short stories and clips on your computer - and also ways to find useful clips. We then went on to look at the use of song and dance as a way of motivating and engaging pupils and resources to use and also where to find them. Date: 15/04/2008 The meeting was very concise. Helen demonstrated many ways to link MFL to other subject areas in the Primary curriculum. An in-depth example was given through Geography and History and lesson plans, resources and media were shown to the group as examples of good practice. We were then given the opportunity to discuss ideas on linking throught other subjects with Helen and were given the opportunity to study the many resources (workbook, sheets, programmes etc) that can be used in order to maximise learning potential. Date: 09/06/2008 Rebecca Nelson led the session, where ideas were discussed for exploiting the European Day of Languages for the primary schools. We watched a short video from the CILT website and shared resources and locations to order free resources for the EDL. Topics and ideas for sessions for the next years meetings were also discussed.
