Title: Working with a Foreign Languages Assistant
Venue: Bournemouth Learning Centre
Time: 4:00 - 5:30
Speaker: Tara Deevoy

Thirty two teachers attended our first RSG session of the year. We were very pleased to welcome Tara Deevoy, Primary Teaching Adviser, from The Medway as our guest speaker. The theme of the evening was working with foreign languages assistants in the classroom and how to use this valuable resource effectively. Tara's session was lively, informative and fun. Feedback from everyone who attended was very positive. This was an excellent start to our programme of events for the year.

Title: Using songs and raps in Spanish / A Taste of France
Venue: Bournemouth Learning Centre
Time: 4:00 - 5:30
Speaker: David Vann

The first half of this evening's session "using songs and raps in Spanish" was led by Bournemouth MFL advisor Judith O'Hare. Our main speaker of the evening, David Vann, then led the group through a very useful and informative session on developing internationalism in schools as well as outlining the process and application procedures for all teachers involved in our first work shadowing project in France next May. Feedback on the evening was, as always, very positive. The introduction of raffle prizes for participants has also been very well received!

Title: Share and Tell
Venue: Bournemouth Learning Centre
Time: 4:00 - 5:30
Speaker: Bournemouth lead teachers

Those attending this session were treated to a real show of local MFL teaching talent! Chris Reed, AST from Bournemouth School Language College, started things off by sharing her schools' successes through using older students at Bournemouth School as 'Teachers of Languages' to primary aged children. This was followed by demonstrations and input from local teachers which included teaching Japanese in Y2 (our attempts at making an origami lunch box were not entirely successful!), an opportunity to sing along whilst seeing how music can enhance children's learning, a look at how secondary teachers have successfully engaged with primary classes to use French to support cross-curricular learning, teaching KS1 through a mini beasts project, and finally a look at how one school is using working effectively with their Spanish FLA. As always, the feedback from participants was extremely positive and the raffle prizes and certificates were gratefully received.

Title: Story telling and cross curricular links
Venue: Bournemouth Learning Centre
Time: 4:00 - 5:30
Speaker: Elaine Minett

Languages adviser Judith O'Hare opened the evening in the usual way with a bag of goodies for all participants and an update on things that are happening both nationally and in the Borough. A good turn out of 16 teachers, despite school closures that day, were then treated to an inspiring and engaging presentation by Elaine Minett from West Sussex. She took our group actively through her lessons based on Handa's surprise, the materials for which are all available on the West Sussex website. The group was totally engaged by this presentation. We sang our hearts out too! Feedback on this session has been tremendous. To quote Hazel Renshaw from St Katharine's Primary:

"Thanks for last night, Elaine was so very inspiring. It's easy to see how you could use this book and her ideas in your own school - fab! I can't wait to try this out".

We are looking forward to "blogging" with Ian Finlay at the next RSG and to hearing from our first group of teachers to go to Tours and Angers.

Title: Podcasting, blogging and video streaming
Venue: Bournemouth Learning Centre
Time: 4:00 - 5:30
Speaker: Ian Finlay

This evening's session was such fun no one wanted to go home! Many thanks to Ian Finlay and all the work he put into providing such a really worthwhile programme. Local Primaries have now been officially welcomed to the world of blogging, podcasting and the rest! Three schools hoping for advice on how to get their video conferencing projects off the ground were not disappointed. We think too that those digital blue cameras will be working overtime from now on. The only critisism of the whole evening was the raffle. Some schools seem to have the better luck than others!

Date: 19/06/2008
Title: Ça bouge !
Venue: St Katharine's CE Primary School, Bournmth, BH6 4NA
Time: 4:00 - 5:30
Speaker: Chris Wakely

This evening local teachers gathered at St. Katharine's Primary School for a real treat! Chris Wakely from Devon LA put us through our paces as we explored the links between daily physical exercise and languages. We all laughed a lot, while trying to keep pace through a variety of aerobic exercises, brain gym activities and activities that simply challenged the coordination of the best of us whilst really enjoying ourselves. Chris is an excellent presenter and we were all very excited about 'Ça Bouge' and its implications for our young learners. Most teachers left madly planning tomorrow's activities, which will certainly include languages, fitness and fun! Thanks to Hazel Renshaw for hosting us at their lovely school.
