Regional Support Group sessions

Session 1: Tuesday 3 October 2006
Title: The Funding, the Framework and how they fit together

Speakers: Sarah Sharpe, Pauline Lawes, Trevor Davies, Philip Campagna
Venue: Braeside, Devizes
Time: 4.30

The session was led by the three ELL coordinators for Wiltshire – Sarah Sharpe, Pauline Lawes, Trevor Davies and Philip Campagna. The main focus of the meeting was how the standards fund money would be allocated in the county. Schools are invited to form cluster groups, put together an action plan and money will be allocated on a cluster basis, with a percentage being retained centrally. Advice was given on how the clusters could work together effectively, particularly with regard to schemes of work. It was a very practical and useful session.

Session 2: Monday 4 December 2006
Title: International links - how to get them and what to do with them
Speaker: Liz Hitchcock from the British Council and Paul Quantick, Wiltshire International Coordinator
Venue: Nursteed School, Devizes
Time: 4.30

We had a presentation from Liz Hitchcock from the British Council about establishing international links, supported by Paul Quantick, Wiltshire International Coordinator.  She distributed information and talked about the various opportunities available, including Comenius assistants, Global Gateway, International School Awards etc.  Emma Jefferies from Savernake talked to us about her experiences of international links through the Global Gateway and the great benefits her school has experienced.  We also had three Comenius assistants who work in the county, telling us of their work and experiences to enthuse other schools, and the Head of another school who employs a Spanish British Council Assistant to good effect.

Session 3: Monday 22 January 2007
Title: Integrating MFL across the curriculum
Speaker:
Jo Cole from the International Research Centre in South Gloucestershire

Jo Cole from the International Research Centre in South Gloucestershire gave a presentation on projects involving an intercultural element. She gave examples of projects which primary schools in South Gloucestershire have done and in particular the project which won a European Award last year.
The ideas were practical and achievable for all primary schools with a partner school abroad.
She also talked about the various ways of finding partner schools, such as the Global Gateway.
