Regional
Support Group sessions The session consisted of a range of activities enabling participants to experience - and also invent from resources provided – a variety of approaches to developing pupils’ oral skills, taking into account a range of learning styles. There were opportunities to consider how resources might be modified to embrace the learning needs of more and less able pupils. We also considered how we might, over time, encourage increasing independence in pupils’ use of the spoken language. Delegates went away from the session with strategies they could use the following day as well as new ideas to try, learnt from examples looked at or from ideas gleaned from other colleagues during discussion time in the session.Session
2: Monday 5 February 2007 During this session we looked at ways in which Asset Languages / The Languages Ladder might support both teachers and pupils in the Primary phase through:-
Following a useful presentation delegates were able to ask questions and discuss issues raised in order to gain a good understanding of what Asset Languages can offer the class teacher and the Modern Languages Co-ordinator. We looked at the process of a school supporting a member of staff to become an assessor, at a range of documentation with examples of some requirements at the different levels of achievement, and talked about the links between NC Levels and levels offered through Asset Languages.Session
3: Monday 23 April 2007 Lucy gave us a very comprehensive tour of The Training Zone with tasters of what the training materials can offer individual members of staff, groups of staff from within one school and the potential for use within the local clusters of schools linked to Regional Trainers within the county. She also shared with delegates other elements of the NACELL site, including where to find ideas on resources. The session was an active one with activities prompted by Lucy so that participants were able to go back to school with ideas they could use the very next day in language lessons. There was also ample opportunity to ask questions of Lucy and of LA personnel supporting the development of languages in county schools. Session
4: Tuesday 22 May 2007 Publishers' resources were complemented by fliers and examples of resources from other publishers; a range of CILT publications was also on display so that delegates could place orders and benefit from a 15% discount. The session was buzzing from the very start to the very end of the event. Publishers were generous with their time, information on resources and discounts and ‘inspection’ copies. There were even prizes!! Many stands were interactive so that participants could try out electronic resources first hand. This has been one of our most popularly attended top date, despite a similar event during 05-06. Participants spoke of the range of quality resources and the exciting ways in which young people can now be supported in their language learning, including personalised routes. Once again those who attended were pleased with the range of ‘new’ ideas they had picked up which would further enhance their teaching and learning repertoires. Session
5: Monday 16 July 2007 This session will give delegates an opportunity to hear teachers’ experiences of using a variety of published schemes of work and the links to the KS2 ML framework. We also hope to explore with you the first sections of the revised QCA schemes of work.
NACELL Regional Support Groups are funded by the DfES and co-ordinated by CILT, the National Centre for Languages in support of the National Languages Strategy.
