Somerset Regional Consultative Group is a networking and discussion group hosted by Somerset Regional Support Group.

Regional Consultative Group meetings

RCG 1: Friday 29 September 2006
Venue: Elmhurst Centre, Street
Time: 9.30am

The Somerset LA County MFL Forum that oversees all aspects of Primary MFL is also acting as the RCG. This means in effect that RCG issues are dealt with as an agenda item on the larger meeting agenda.

Items discussed:

  • Role of RCG
  • Role of RSGs
  • Outlined details of plan for RSGs 2006 – 07
  • Agreed to offer incentive to all attending the 5 sessions during the year – i.e. Song CD (Chantez plus fort – approx £40) or item to equivalent value
  • Agreed to trial venues in Secondary Schools in spirit of liaison – in the hopes of attracting some Secondary School colleagues to find out about Primary MFL
  • Agreed that RCG should be standing item on County Forum Agenda

RCG 2: Friday 9 February 2007
Venue: Elmhurst Centre, Street
Time: 9.30am

Items discussed:

  • Attendance at RSGs
  • Format of RSGs – input required, but teachers appreciate the opportunity to share issues and solutions. Very encouraging that, for example, KS1 issue raised could be dealt with by a colleague
  • Cream cakes are VERY much appreciated!
  • Secondary Schools as venues – difficult to access, and not popular with Primary Teachers. In the 2 sessions so far, only 1 Secondary School has participated – none from either school used a venue. Refreshments difficult to organise in the Secondary Schools
  • Access to venue
  • Teachers like to have practical ideas/hand-outs to take away with them
  • Not huge numbers at sessions, - average of 16 – but very worthwhile

RCG 3: Friday 8 June 2007
Venue: Elmhurst Centre, Street
Time: 9.30am

Items discussed:

  • Feedback on the RSGs – attendance has been acceptable but more participants would be welcome in the coming year
  • The 5th RSG had to be cancelled as only 2 people signed up. It was felt that the summer term is very busy and maybe this is the reason why
  • 5 RSGs planned for 2007 – 2008, plus 5 additional entitled:  “Purrfect pronunciation” in response to requests from Teachers to help build their own confidence. Will run these at the start of the terms. Will look at the sort of vocabulary coming up based on Early Start 1 and LCP 1
  • Tutors from 4 venues across the county will attend to enable similar sessions to be run at Adult Leisure and Learning centres
  • Language College in south of the county has offered to run some RSGs to make access easier for teachers in that part of the county
  • Sessions with practical ideas are by far the most popular
