Regional Support Group sessions

Session 1: Monday 16 October 2006
Title: “TAKING THE PLUNGE”
Speaker(s): Lesley Hooper
Venue: Blue School, Wells

This first session of the year was to encourage those who have newly started – or are about to start, teaching primary MFL. 26 teachers came and gave very positive feedback at the end of the session. They went away having learnt how to teach new language using the “Graded approach”, from the CPD materials on the NACELL website, plus a bank of games and activities useful to practise and consolidate new language both orally, aurally and at word level. Passing the soft toy in response to hearing words for fruit proved to be the most popular activity of the session as they all wanted to cuddle the seal!! If their pupils could have seen them…

Two colleagues from a Special School, one from a Middle School and two from a Secondary School joined the Primary and First School Teachers in what was later described with the following comments:

  • Lots of ideas to “launch in”
  • Emphais on teaching a little well to begin with – gives me confidence.
  • Keep it simple. Short sessions are best.
  • Practical ideas to use in the classroom.
  • Good length of session – meant we didn’t have to take away too much at once: “Bite size”.
  • Step-by-step approach to “taking the plunge”.

The overall feedback was that this session was very useful all round - for receiving information, networking, sharing issues and solutions and for the short training element. The cakes were appreciated too!

Session 2: Monday 13 November 2006
Title: Cultural inspirations
Speaker(s): Lesley Hooper
Venue: Preston School, Yeovil

A lively session entitled “Cultural inspirations” certainly proved to be exactly that, given the feedback from the teachers who attended.  Numerous ideas were shared by participants from their own experience during the workshop.  New ideas were explored together with “two heads better than one” proving useful and valid for those who very new to Primary MFL who paired up with someone more experienced.  Everyone left with a pack of ideas to put into practice throughout the year, and also with a Christmas pack.  Thanks to Marina from the Suffolk RSG who had passed on her “Santas Sack” idea which went down very well in rural Somerset.  One teacher reported that this was the best MFL course she had ever been on as it was so practical and so useful!

Session 3: Tuesday 13 February 2007
Title: Resources
Speaker(s): Lucie Haddon (Leading Teacher) & Lesley Hooper (Primary Strategy Consultant for MFL)
Venue: Elmhurst Centre, Street
Time: 4.00 – 5.30

This was a very lively session as we explored some different ways of using a story and a song.  Resources for literacy links, suggestions for an assembly and a ready to use PowerPoint version of the story were taken away by everyone.  The County Resource Collection was a source of much interest as people browsed while enjoying their cream cakes on arrival.  Thanks to Leading Teacher Lucie Haddon for leading this session so ably and so confidently despite this being the first training session she had led.

Session 4: Tuesday 24 April 2007
Title: Storytelling
Speaker(s): Lesley Hooper
Venue: Elmhurst Centre, Street

Time: 4.00 – 5.30

Discussion and participation were definitely on the agenda for this session!  The teachers who attended this fourth RSG took the opportunity to critique the materials that had been put together as possible ways of exploring these different areas. The websites “takatrouver” and “petites mains” together with two French Primary School websites provided the basis from which ideas had been gleaned. As well as using authentic non-fiction texts and fulfilling some of the KS2 objectives that refer directly to such sorts of materials, the cross-curricular threads with DT, cooking and art were evident. Teachers completed very positive evaluation forms and will be able to access the materials from the Somerset website ready to use in their classrooms.

Session 5: Tuesday 5 June 2007 *CANCELLED*
Title: Crossing boundaries: cross curricular French

Speaker(s): Paula Baker & Giuliana Butt
Venue: Elmhurst Centre, Street
Time: 4.00 – 5.30
