Regional Support Group sessions

Session 1: Thursday 2 November 2006
Title: Using the interactive whiteboard in primary language teaching
Speaker: Gill Teal, Primary languages Consultant, Newcastle LA
Title: Maximising the Potential of the Able Young Linguist
Speaker: Marion Murray, University of Newcastle
Venue: Monkseaton Community High School Language College

An excellent turn-out of colleagues from four different Local Authorities enjoyed a very stimulating and varied session. First Gill Teal and Lynn Dryden showed us a variety of interactive whiteboard activities using the Smartboard and then Marion Murray focussed on role-play and its potential to stretch all language learners and in particular the most able. The feedback from those attending was excellent and we all appreciated the opportunity to hear from yet more leading practitioners in our area.

Session 2: Thursday 1 February 2007
Title: Creating stories using the electronic whiteboard
Speaker(s): Wendy Adeniji
Venue: Monkseaton Community High School Language College
Time: 4.30 – 6.00, refreshments from 16.00

A full house of 35 colleagues from five different LAs spent a very convivial two hours first networking and looking at the display of resources while enjoying a splendid afternoon tea before Wendy Adjeniji’s most stimulating presentation. Wendy showed us examples of stories in French, Spanish and German on the whiteboard which gave us all ideas and food for thought, before demonstrating how to create such stories. This was followed by an opportunity for hands-on practice in the techniques Wendy had shown us.

Session 3: Thursday 15 March 2007
Title:
Petit Pont Primary French multimedia resource
Speaker:
Deirdre Kerrigan, Paul Rogers
Venue: Monkseaton Community High School Language College
Time: 4.30 – 6.00, refreshments from 16.00

Another stimulating session at which twenty colleagues first networked before Deirdre Kerrigan taught them the song L’Emp’reur, sa Femme et le petit Prince’ before showing them a DVD of her class performing the song to win the Facteur X competition at St Thomas More RC High School last summer.

Then we were delighted to have as our main speaker Paul Rogers, author of Petit Pont, come to show us this excellent ICT package to support Primary Language learning. We look forward to seeing more of Petit Pont in the future.

Session 4: Thursday 17 May 2007
Title: (i) Electronic Big Books on CD Rom in French and Spanish from Early Start Languages
Speaker(s): Louise Miller
Title: (ii) Version 2 of the Complete Course in Primary French
Facilitator: Jane Dawson, Mike Butler
Venue: Monkseaton Community High School Language College
Time: 4.30 – 6.00, refreshments from 16.00

Louise Miller of Early Start Languages began the session with a presentation of the Electronic Big Books which the company produce. Colleagues were very impressed to see the variety of activities which accompany each story, as well as the entertaining nature of the stories. The quality of the graphics is excellent and the native speakers featured in both the French and Spanish versions were most expressive. Louise showed us stories aimed at younger children as well as those for Year 6 and those of us with little knowledge of Spanish felt that we had learnt quite a lot in a little time!

Jane Dawson and Mike Butler then showed colleagues Version 2 of the Complete Course in Primary French, which now features an audio CD with listening assessments, a pronunciation guide and stories, all recorded by native speakers. The updated main CD has new sections, such as a sample Languages Policy for schools, an assessment section, stories and non-fiction texts and intercultural understanding.

Session 5: Thursday 21 June 2007
Title: (i) Organising a Languages Day
Speaker(s): Jane Dawson
Title: (ii) Using a Digi-Blue camera
Facilitator: Matt Ward AST, Newcastle LA
Venue: Monkseaton Community High School Language College
Time: 4.30 – 6.00, refreshments from 16.00

The first part of our session today consisted of a short presentation by Jane Dawson on organising a Languages Day. Jane provided us with a thick booklet of hand-outs culled from her many years experience of organising French Days at Greenfields Primary School. Excellent tips included a Treasure Hunt taking the children all the way round the perimeter of the school grounds to tire them out as they are always so excited on a Languages Day!

Our second speaker was Matt Ward who delivered a most stimulating and enjoyable session on the use of the Digi-Blue recorder. Matt first of all showed us examples of work created by his own pupils using this technology and then demonstrated the simple steps required to film ourselves speaking and to add this to a powerpoint of a children’s story. Matt described it as a simple session, but as far as we were all concerned, that is the best type of ICT session! Colleagues felt it was the right balance between showing us what to do and then giving us the chance to do it. The ‘César’ for the winning creation went to Geraldine, Lucy, Anne-Marie and Chris for a thrilling production of ‘Boucle d’Or’.
