Dorset Regional Consultative Group is a networking and discussion group hosted by Dorset RSG.

Regional Support Group sessions

Session 1: Tuesday 31 October 2006
Title: Bringing Big Books to Life
Speaker(s): Elaine Minett, West Sussex LA
Venue: Dorset School Effectiveness Centre (DSEC)

Our very first RSG here in Dorset was well attended with teachers, TAs and Headteachers travelling from far and wide to participate in the session. The speaker was Elaine Minett, an Advisory Teacher from West Sussex LA. She led us through a series of lessons based on the popular children’s book ‘We’re going on a Bear Hunt.’ The session was ‘hands on’ and we all had great fun acting out various parts of the story, particularly the onomatopoeic sounds. We were amazed how many ideas Elaine had to exploit the story both in a language lesson and across the curriculum into Drama and PE. All participants received a free CD of all the resources demonstrated. We are now looking forward to seeing Elaine’s other ideas for exploiting Big Books on the West Sussex Grid For Learning.

Session 2: Tuesday 28th November 2006
Title: Ideas for Christmas and the Playground
Speaker(s): Jo Crocombe
Venue: Cranborne Middle School

Jo Crocombe, PMFL Consultant from Poole LA led us through a myriad of activities that could be used in connection with Christmas. Once again, this was a ‘hands on’ session where we got the scissors, glue and colouring pencils out and even acted out the Nativity in French. Jo also introduced us to a number of useful websites which we could use with our classes. All participants really enjoyed the session and were even more grateful to take away a CD of all the resources shown and more.

Session 3: Thursday 15 February 2007
Title: Primary Languages website
Speaker(s): Jo Crocombe, Ruth Parker
Venue:Thomas Hardyes School, Dorchester
Time: 4:15 – 6:00pm

On 15th February 30 teachers attended the RSG session, held at Thomas Hardyes School in Dorchester. We had hoped that Kati Szeless was going to give a presentation about the Primary Languages website, however she was unable to attend at the last minute. Instead, Jo Crocombe showed the new books that she had bought on a recent visit to France. Ruth Parker shared some cross-curricular resources based on the 'Le Depart' unit of work produced by West Sussex and talked about other ideas for cross-curricular work. Those attending were also able to peruse a large number of resources that Ruth had brought along to the session.

Session 4: Thursday 3 May 2007
Title: Sharing Good Practice
Speaker(s): Consultant Leading Teachers: Heidi Inns, Karen Parnell, Isla Ferguson
Venue: Ferndown Middle School
Time: 4:15 – 6:00pm

Twenty-five teachers attended the RSG session on ‘Sharing Good Practice’ at Ferndown Middle School in East Dorset.

After an update on national developments and an overview of the training programme for next year, our three Consultant Leading Teachers led a short session on a topic/area that they had been developing with their classes.

Heidi Inns began by presenting delegates ideas for differentiation in MFL, using the Year 5 and Year 6 Schemes of Work that she has written for her school.

Karen Parnell showed us how to use Digital Blu cameras and gave us lots of ideas how they could be used for MFL. We were very impressed how easy they were to use. Several schools already have these cameras and teachers were looking forward to trying them out on their return to school.

Finally, Isla Ferguson presented a unit of cross-curricular work based around the Year 3 History QCA Unit ‘Why did Henry VIII marry six times?’ The PowerPoint presentation that Isla had created for this was highly amusing and we all agreed that pupils would benefit from this cross-curricular approach to teaching MFL.

Session 5: Thursday 14 June 2007
Title: Little Tails of the Unexpected
Speaker(s): Val Thornber
Venue: TBA

Time: 4:15 – 6:00pm
