Regional Support Group sessions

Session 1: Thursday 14 September 2006
Title: Using ICT and IWB technology to support PMFL teaching
Speaker(s): Judith O’Hare, AST
Venue: Bournemouth Learning Centre

Judith O’Hare, MFL Adviser for Bournemouth LA, led a lively session on how to use the internet, ICT and IWB technology to support the teaching of French and Spanish in Primary schools. Teachers at the session were able to gain some hands on experience and also to prepare materials for their own use. Part of the session included an opportunity to look at, practise using and evaluate a number of recently published commercial packages including Tout le Monde (Heinemann) Sonica Spanish (RM) and Rigolo (Nelson Thornes). Chris Reed the Primary support teacher from Bournemouth School Language College also presented examples of the work she has done in local Primary schools.

Session 2: Thursday 23rd November 2006
Title: French without fear
Speaker(s): Jenny Carpenter PMFL consultant Barking and Dagenham LA
Venue: Bournemouth Learning Centre

18 primary school teachers attended the second of our RSG meetings. The speaker was Jenny Carpenter, a primary teaching consultant from Barking and Dagenham LA. She led a lively and interesting session on getting the most out of the use of classroom language to support the teaching of both French and Spanish. All participants commented favourably on both the content and delivery of this session and felt it had been both a worthwhile and interesting evening. All participants received a free CD of all the resources used as well as the session notes.

Session 3: Thursday 8th February 2007
Title: Bonjour Monsieur X

Speaker : David Hicks AST, Cambridge
Venue: Bournemouth Learning Centre (BLC)
Time: 16:00 – 18:00

A record 30 teachers stepped out into the cold to attend this our third RSG session. Our brave presenter was the one and only Monsieur X David Hicks who, ignoring the snow and icy conditions in Cambridge, came down to Bournemouth and presented what was for us all, a totally inspirational session on how to teach languages through rhythm and rhyme. So inspired were our local teachers that they refused to leave at the end of the session and following tumultuous applause and cries of “Bravo”, David kindly played on. We are very much hoping that Monsieur X having been “lured” by our MFL advisor Judith O’Hare to a view of our lovely town and lack of snow in extreme conditions (!!), will agree to return to once again next year to delight us with his magic. Bournemouth teachers have been truly inspired.

Session 4: Thursday 26th April
Title: Crossing the divide
Speaker(s): Chris Behagg MFL adviser West Sussex LA
Venue: Bournemouth Learning Centre
Time: 16:00 – 18:00

Once again this session was very well attended and it was pleasing to note that increasingly both Primary and Secondary teachers are using this opportunity to meet together to share their ideas and experiences of teaching MFL.
Chris Behagg delighted our audience not just with the content of her inspired presentation but also with her sound and practical ideas for the teaching of languages in an imaginative and achievable way.  Feedback on the evening was very, very positive.
Bournemouth teachers have now not just some wonderful, new and really interesting ideas to follow through as well as some excellent resources they can use immediately, but also some down to earth and practical solutions to many of the questions and concerns they have raised. Chris’ common sense approach to the teaching of languages was pitched exactly right and inspired even the most wary classroom teachers to have a go. We are eternally grateful!
Teachers in Bournemouth LA hope that the partnership now established with West Sussex and can be developed and sustained into the future. We have all gained considerably from the evening’s event.
Many, many thanks to Chris and her team for the wonderful work they are doing.

Session 5: Thursday 24 May 2007
Title: The Training Zone
Speaker(s): Kati Szeless - CILT Language Teaching Adviser
Venue: Bournemouth Learning Centre
Time: 16:00 – 18:00

A relatively small but very enthusiastic group of colleagues attended the Bournemouth RSG at Bournemouth Learning Centre Ensbury Park, Bournemouth on 24th May.
Kati Szeless led a lively and informative session with plenty of practical activities to enable participants to become familiar with the new KS2 on-line Training Zone.
There was a wide range of experience represented at the meeting, across all Key Stages, including secondary partners. Kati catered for everybody’s needs by introducing activities and clips in multi languages and in a fun & stimulating way. Everyone went away with some new ideas to use in their primary MFL teaching as well a clear understanding of how the Training Zone will support teaching and learning in the classroom.
