The Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF) has commissioned CILT, the National Centre for Languages to develop training materials, support and a national training programme to train England’s 18,000 primary schools to use the KS2 Framework for Languages effectively and embed primary languages in the curriculum. Launched in 2006, the Training the Trainers programme offers a cascading model of training to support the effective implementation of the KS2 languages entitlement across England. View the training programme structure (PowerPoint file, 966 KB) To date, CILT has recruited 50 national trainers from the nine regions of England, via the Comenius Network. The national trainers in turn have trained over 1000 regional trainers in almost every Local Authority. Trainers were identified as key individuals involved in working strategically in their local authority's primary schools. The aim of the training is to create a national workforce of Regional Trainers who will be in a position to train teachers and practitioners in embedding languages into the primary curriculum. This process will be driven by the Primary Languages Strategy of the relevant Local Authority. The training is based on the Key Stage 2 Framework for Languages, supported by training materials developed by the CILT Primary Team and the Primary Languages Training Zone. Trainers will support their local authorities’ strategies for implementation of the Key Stage 2 Languages entitlement by offering training to schools and disseminating best practice. Many trainers will be actively disseminating this training in their Local Authority now. For more information on the trainers in your local authority, please contact your region’s Comenius Manager: www.cilt.org.uk/comenius.
