Primary CPD Extended Pilot Materials

The Primary French, German and Spanish CPD course handbooks for Trainers and Teachers have been developed by the TDA, in co-operation with other key partners, and funded by the DCSF. The course is aimed at primary teachers wishing to teach French, German and Spanish to primary age pupils. The course materials are available to freely download for use in HEI institution or regional training. Trainers can access the materials from the Primary Languages Training Zone website.

Short Course for Teaching Assistants and Higher Level Teaching Assistants

This short course has been developed by the DCSF for schools and local authorities wishing to train Teaching Assistants and Higher Level Assistants to teach languages to primary age pupils. This course offers a 20 hour introduction to language teaching in primary schools, equipping participants with some basic principles underpinning good practice, a range of practical activities for use in the classroom, and pinpoints sources of further support. The course materials are available to freely download for use in HEI institution or regional training. Trainers can access the materials from the Primary Languages Training Zone website.

KS2 Framework for LanguagesKey Stage 2 Framework for Languages

The Framework is a comprehensive source of guidance on planning and delivering the primary languages entitlement. It consists of three parts:

  • Part 1 - Learning Objectives   
  • Part 2 - Guidance for different audiences, including schools which are new to teaching languages and those building on current provision
  • Part 3 - More detailed planning and guidance

The Framework can be ordered via TeacherNet or DfES Publications. The online version of Parts 1 and 2 is available on the DCSF's Standards Site, alongside all the other guidance and teaching and learning materials for the primary curriculum.

Primary Languages

The Primary Languages Training Zone is an online training zone for teaching and learning languages at Key Stage 2. Trainers registered on the CILT Training the Trainers programme or ITT trainers may access the trainers' zone. Additional zones for leaders and teachers provide digital video case studies on planning and implementing primary languages to illustrate the principles of the KS2 Framework for Languages.
