Primary
Languages is the online training zone for teaching and learning languages
at Key Stage 2.
The
Primary Languages Training
Zone was launched in March 2007. It aims to support the KS2 languages
entitlement by providing online
professional development
and training to teachers, leaders and trainers
involved in the planning and delivery of languages at KS2.
CILT, the National
Centre for Languages is developing the Training Zone over the next three
years, working closely with teachers, leaders and trainers from schools
and Local Authorities across England.
The Training Zone
comprises digital video case studies on planning and implementing
primary languages to illustrate the principles of the KS2 Framework
for Languages. These video sequences are supported by other downloadable
resources, including guidance documents and sound files.
The Training Zone
includes four main sections:
The Leaders'
Zone focuses on whole school matters including needs analysis
and self-evaluation, curriculum planning, timetabling, staffing, staff
development, assessment and guidance for effective transfer arrangements.
The Teachers'
Zone exemplifies best practice in embedding languages into
the primary curriculum and delivering the learning objectives of the
KS2 Framework for Languages. It provides support on a range of key issues,
including guidance on how to plan lessons and units of work using the
Framework and examples of how to link language learning with other areas
of the curriculum, how to develop context-sensitive assessment and how
to support progression.
The Media Library
also enables users to search for clips from the Teachers' Zone by Year
(3-6), Language (currently French, German, Spanish, Italian, Bengali,
Japanese), Activity (Big Books, Pairwork, Roleplay, Song), ICT (Interactive
whiteboards, Internet, Email), Strand (Oracy, Literacy, Intercultural
understanding, Knowledge about language, Language Learning Strategies)
or
Provider (Class teacher, Foreign Language Assistant, Teaching Assistant)
The Trainers'
Zone is open to registered trainers on the CILT
Training the Trainers programme and trainers working in primary
initial teacher training institutions.
The Support
and Guidance Zone provides further information
and resources for training, including key links to NACELL.
