Primary languages in initial teacher training project

The primary languages in initial teacher training (ITT) project is a shared initiative involving the Training and Development Agency for Schools (TDA) and European partners, supported by CILT, The National Centre for Languages. The project began in 2001 with the aim of producing generalist primary teachers who have an integrated approach to teaching across the curriculum and who are well-equipped to teach foreign languages. As part of their training, trainees undertake a four-week teaching placement in a relevant EU country, funded by the DCSF.

So far, over 2,000 trainees have taken part in the programme and the range of languages being offered by teacher training providers in England continues to grow.

To find out more about the different training options, visit the information pages on NACELL training to teach languages in primary education.
