NEW! The changing landscape of languages - an evaluation of language learning 2004-2007

Report evaluating language teaching and learning in Key Stages 2, 3 and 4, adult education and initial teacher training. Part B includes a section focusing on primary languages, 'starting early: languages in Key Stage 2' (pp. 30-39). This includes findings from the Key Stage 2 Pathfinders evaluation (Ofsted, 2005) and those based on subject inspection reports carried out between 2005 and 2007 in an additional 60 schools. Topics include provision, quality of teaching and learning, the impact of languages on other areas of the curriculum, planning and resources as well as recommendations for schools, LAs and government organisations.

Implementing languages entitlement in primary schools: Evaluation of Key Stage 2 Pathfinders

This report evaluates the progress of ten Pathfinder projects during 2004. It looks at the quality of leadership and management of the project and the impact this has on pupils’ achievement, as well as on key aspects of provision such as staffing, training and the primary-secondary dialogue. The report identifies issues for further attention and includes prompts for use in self-evaluation in primary and secondary schools, and in LEAs.
