Research, reports and National Languages Strategy updates
CILT 7-14 transition project report published (July 2008)

In April 2007 the DCSF commissioned CILT to run a project focussing on effective transition from KS2 to KS3 in languages.
The final report from phase 1 of the project is now available to download from the brand new transition pages on the CILT website.

Also included are case studies, links to resources and information about the continuation of the project during 2008-2009. The transition pages will grow as more case studies and materials are added over the next few weeks and as the next phase of the project progresses.
New interim reports from DCSF commissioned research into language teaching and learning in English schools (26 June 2008)

On Thursday 26 June 2008, three new interim reports were published from DCSF commissioned longitudinal research into language teaching and learning in English schools. These included findings that showed a 14% increase in the number of schools teaching languages at Key Stage 2 between autumn 2006 and autumn 2007. Schools Minister Jim Knights commented in a DCSF press release

“'... I’ve seen in schools the pride on children’s faces when they can count to ten and tell the time in a foreign language - it does wonders for their confidence, especially when they know more than their parents! Children find language learning easier in primary than starting in secondary school.

"Today’s research means that we are on target to meet our aim of ensuring all primary school children have the opportunity to learn another language by 2010..."

You can read the full press release online (at the DCSF website).

Two reports are briefs from ongoing research examining Key Stage 2 language learning across England from 2006 to 2009. The third report released was interim findings from research examining the impact of the KS3 Framework and changes to the KS3 curriculum between 2006 and 2008.

The links to each are available on the NACELL official documentation pages for DCSF publications and commissioned research.

Part 3 DCSF KS2 framework for languages available to download from NACELL

The framework is a comprehensive source of guidance and advice for teachers and curriculum managers planning and delivering language learning in primary schools.

Part 3 of the KS2 framework, published April 2007, is now available to download in pdf format from the NACELL official documentation pages. Hard copies can be ordered from DCSF publications (quote reference 00171-2007DOM-EN).
