Developing Early Language Learning Phase 2
This work will be
undertaken in a group of primary phase schools in partnership with Sir
Bernard Lovell secondary school, a specialist language college. Teachers
in Key Stages 2 and 3 will work collaboratively to develop a model of
curriculum continuity for both key stages bridging the gap from the successful
Early Foreign Language practice established in primary phase to effective
MFL practice in years 7 and 8. This will result in a programme which will
provide for effective linguistic progression.
The main areas of
work will be:
- to identify common concepts in English and MFL at both key stages,
developing common, mutually beneficial, literacy approaches in both
subject areas
- to identify, share
and disseminate the most effective common teaching and learning strategies
in the four skills, with a particular focus on approaches to the teaching
of reading and writing
- to investigate
how to plan for linguistic progression between the key stages; developing
the use of the QCA schemes of work and integrating the identified common
teaching approaches within the curriculum programme
- the teachers will
devise and trial resource materials to promote an effective link between
the two key stages. It is intended that this will be a unit of work
to act as a bridging unit between year 6 and year 7
- to arrive at
a shared understanding and system for assessing linguistic competence
at the point of transition
