South Hunsley School is a rural 11-18 comprehensive school in the East Riding of Yorkshire. The South Hunsley Partnership consists of South Hunsley School and its seven traditional feeder Primary Schools in the villages of Brough, Elloughton, North Cave, North Ferriby, South Cave, Swanland and Welton. Since September 1997, following a year of close cross-phase liaison, the seven Primary Schools have taught French to their Year 6 pupils, following an agreed syllabus using the "Pilote" course. Pupils learn French for thirty minutes per week. The emphasis is on oral and aural competence, with some reading in the target language. Writing is not taught. From September 1999 French was introduced into Year 5 and it is intended that both Year 5 and Year 6 will continue to learn French in future years. The extension of French into Year 5 has raised the problem of maintaining pupil enthusiasm and motivation and colleagues are currently addressing this issue. Key features of this project are the cross-phase links and the linguistic progression into Key Stage 3 built into the scheme from the beginning. The South Hunsley Modern Foreign Languages department supported and assisted throughout the planning stage and continues to do so through regular meetings with Primary colleagues. The language is delivered by non-specialists whose knowledge of French varies considerably. The cross-phase co-operation has involved rewriting Schemes of Work in Key Stage 3 to take account of the French learnt in Key Stage 2. The position of German in South Hunsley has also changed, now being introduced as a second foreign language from January of Year 7 for some forty per cent of the year group rather than being a joint first foreign language with French. Having begun to learn French in Key Stage 2 all students will now continue to learn the language to the end of Key Stage 3, and the vast majority to the end of Key Stage 4. Pupils from Primary Schools other than those in the Partnership are taught as a discreet group in French from the beginning of Year 7 prior to re-integration later in the year. Support from the East Riding of Yorkshire Council, both financial and educational, has played a key rôle in the success of this project. The enthusiasm for, and competence in, the language engendered by the early start is obvious to the Year 7 teachers of French and is testimony to the efforts of our Primary colleagues.
