French has been taught at Scotts Primary School in Hornchurch for several years. The tuition is provided by native speaker tutors from Havering Council's Europa Centre for Modern Languages.

Every year children in Year 5 are offered the opportunity to attend the classes which are held at Scotts after school on Wednesdays during term time. Most continue into Year 6, giving those who opt for French two years experience of the language before entering secondary school.

The tutors follow a scheme of work devised for the Europa Centre's own classes, covering topics appropriate to the children's own experience such as personal identification, house and home, family, numbers, money, shopping, places in town, directions, weather, seasons and festivals.

The teaching methodology emphasises active learning using approaches and resources suited to children of primary age, including games, songs and stories.

The teaching of French is keenly supported by the Head Teacher, Mrs Petula Allen. Interest amongst pupils is high and the subject is popular with parents.
