We know from OFSTED that a modern foreign language is included in the curriculum at Key Stage 2 in about one primary school in five - that means that there are around 4000 primary schools currently teaching languages to early learners.

What these lessons look like will vary enormously, depending on the amount of time allocated, staffing, availability of resources and indeed, the rationale for its inclusion in the curriculum.

The QCA, however, have produced non-statutory guidelines to support schools which are teaching or planning to teach a modern foreign language at Key Stage 2 and a non-statutory scheme of work for KS2 French with exemplar units in German and Spanish.

The following reports will give you a taste of what took place in schools around the country as they tackled the teaching of languages to early learners.
