At Headlands School, we have been teaching French as part of the curriculum for approximately five years. At present, French is taught to our Y5/6 pupils. Selected topics such as families, animals, local study and shopping are taught through lots of oral activities, songs, stories and games.

In addition to weekly direct teaching sessions (forty minutes), we try to identify opportunities throughout the week to reinforce and extend our modern language teaching. There is little formal written work but pupils do see and read French through simple reading acitivites and classroom displays.

We have established a wonderful link with a primary school in Grenoble ande exchange letters and e-mails regularly.

For the first time this autumn, we took a party of Y6 pupils to Normandy for five days.

The children visited a baker's shop and made croissants.

We shopped at Evron market and spent time wandering around the lovely towns and villages of southern Normandy.

This is the beautiful medieval castle we explored at Fougeres.

Despite the long journeys, it was a marvellous trip and a super start to this year's French teaching.
