Helen Thomas, Primary Learning and Teaching Consultant for Languages from Stoke on Trent, has this to report from the recent Primary Languages Show in Manchester:

Inspiring. Dynamic. Informative. These are just some of the many words that I could use to sum up another successful CILT Primary Languages Show (PLS) held in Manchester on 29 February and 1 March 2008. From the novice to the expert, this year’s show really did have something to offer for all those involved in primary languages.

Welcomed to the show by Geoff Swinn, Deputy CEO and Director of Education and Skills at CILT and Therese Comfort, Head of Primary at CILT, the PLS got off to a roaring start when the audience were entertained with an energetic Chinese lion dance.

However, participants attending Plenary A weren’t sedentary for long, as soon Steven Fawkes from the Association for Language Learning expertly led them through to a language performance which had them all boogying in the aisles, and singing and gesturing in French to a rather familiar Kylie Minogue track! I believe that for those attending this particular session, it really set the tone for the weekend: there was a palpable buzz and excitement about what lay in store as people filtered off to their various workshops.

I’m sure I speak for many when I say that we were rather spoilt for choice when it came to deciding on our preferred workshops - the scope on offer was quite staggering with as many as 80 different workshops, and I’m sure I could have quite happily attended a great many more.

Workshops ranged from themes such as ICT, progression and transition, creativity, cross-curricular links, AfL, “Strategic Development Discussions” and language taster sessions too.

This opportunity for me to share and gain ideas with colleagues to enhance my own CPD has been an invaluable experience.

Congratulations and a thank you must go out to all the CILT team for their impeccable organisation of this year’s PLS and I know that this is a date already in my diary for next year too!

The next CILT Primary Languages Show is due to take place on Friday 6 and Saturday 7 March 2009.
