Travel with the Bear

The British German connection offers primary schools a unique resource for German – schools can request a visit by Alex the Bear!

Alex is from Berlin (he lives at the Alexanderplatz) and is currently travelling around the country introducing children to his country and culture (he has a friend, Ben the Bear who does the same over in Germany). Here Kay Goerner reports on Alex’s visit to her school in the Wirral.

Willkommen in Wirral Alex

My school love The Voyage website (www.the-voyage.com) and follow the adventures of Alex and Ben. We requested a visit by Alex the bear and they were so looking forward to him coming to our school.

Jake remembers, “I was excited about him coming as he seems so cute on the website.” Alex arrived on 1 December last year with his suitcase and Grace reflects, “When Mrs Goerner opened the box, I was so interested.“

After meeting my class he was promptly taken into the hall for our Weihnachtsmarkt (Christmas Market). There he met all the children and parents.

Alex the bearThe following Monday we went to Chester as part of our History topic on The Romans. Alex was looked after by two children on the coach and carefully taken round Chester with our Roman soldier. He also took part in the workshop and had a great time. He is pictured with Jake, who was dressed as a Roman soldier.

Alex was able to make friends with Barnaby Bear and they went to The Lake District together on the Saturday and sent us a postcard, which we put in the album.

Alex visited each class during their German lesson and the children were able to converse with him. Having Alex in the class made our German lessons even more fun. He seemed to come alive in the classroom and the children saw him as a real bear! The materials which came with him enabled me to further develop the cultural strand in the PL programme.

“The funniest thing was the tin of Berliner Luft which he brought,” said Tom and he still smiles when he thinks of it.

"I liked the CD he brought as we could choose the English or German version - we chose German!“ said Callam proudly.

As a teacher I must say the lesson plans were of great value to me for future lessons. Looking at the diaries from other schools with their pictures and accounts was very interesting. Having previously studied Berlin in History, we were able to revisit Berlin and learn more about it. The children enjoyed writing their diary entries and choosing the ones for the album.

The children’s words best sum up his visit:
"He helped my German get better” – Courtney
"I love Alex the bear” – Bethany
And Katie’s opinion: “The best thing about his visit was everything! “
Auf Wiedersehen Alex!
