Effective
methods
Teachers across the
country are working in a variety of different situations and use a range
of approaches for teaching and learning a foreign language, including:
- direct teaching,
through whole-class and small-group sessions;
- use of games and
activities requiring a physical response;
- opportunities
for pupils to apply their learning, either on their own, e.g. reading
or writing independently, or with others, e.g. working in pairs or small
groups, or communicating with people in other countries, with varying
degrees of support;
- opportunities
for pupils to reflect on and reinforce their own learning, e.g. learning
by heart or revising work.
When learning a new
language, teachers might expect children to make progress in some of the
following areas:
- developing language
skills and language-learning skills;
- listening, speaking,
reading and writing skills;
- awareness of different
countries, cultures and people;
- developing understanding
of how language works;
- understanding,
learning and applying simple aspects of grammar.
In this section of
the NACELL best practice guide you will find clear guidance on
methodology, taken from the Teacher's guide which accompanies the QCA
Scheme of work for MFL at KS2, as well as advice, activities and case
studies from around the country.
